Position Title: Counselor Advocate (MSW)

Location: High School for Dual Language and Asian Studies (350 Grand Street, NY, NY 10002)

Schedule: Part Time, up to 20 hours weekly

Start Date: October 2019

Program Overview

CPC's LEAD (Learn. Excel. Advocate. Dream) Program at the HS for Dual Language and Asian Studies supports students with their transition from middle school to high school. The program is currently seeking a part-time Counselor Advocate to work collaboratively with CPC's LEAD team in providing holistic youth development programming for 9th and 10th grade students and conduct individualized counseling and case management. Qualified candidates must have a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The Counselor Advocate will report directly to the LEAD Program Director.

  • Maintain a caseload of 25-30 participants
  • Provide ongoing guidance and counseling sessions; develop individualized service strategies with participants that reflect both their educational and personal goals; monitor progress towards successful promotion to the next grade
  • Support with facilitating weekly skills-building workshops centered on social emotional learning competencies including self-awareness; relationship skills; responsible decision-making; and self-management
  • Ensure consistent participation in program activities and workshops; track participant attendance; procure transcripts; manage participant files
  • Refer students to support services within CPC and/or community partners as needed
  • Fulfill other related responsibilities as assigned by the Program Director
 
Position Requirements

Qualifications and Skills

  • MSW required
  • Experience working with high school youth, parents/guardians, and school personnel
  • Familiarity with the NYC Department of Education school grade promotion requirements and the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development’s Core Competencies for Youth Work
  • Culturally competent, self-motivated professional with a strong work ethic
  • Demonstrated passion for working with diverse populations
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize, and manage multiple assignments
  • Fluency in Chinese (Mandarin) required
