Grounds and Event Support Supervisor 

Description

This is your opportunity to join the dynamic Zoo Operations team at Woodland Park Zoo. Applications are now being accepted for Grounds and Event Support Supervisor in the Grounds department. There is one full-time, regular position to be filled at this time.

The Grounds department is responsible for all day-to-day facility and event-related operations on the campus of Woodland Park Zoo, and supports other zoo departments by providing a labor resource. The Grounds and Events Support Supervisor is a first-line supervisory position responsible for oversight, coordination and direction of the Grounds staff, which includes Grounds Maintenance Lead Workers, Laborers, Custodians and seasonal Laborers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan, schedule, prioritize, supervise, and direct the work of the Grounds staff including: routine custodial work, event support and labor support (e.g. restroom service and stocking; refuse collection; facility cleaning; office moves; room/meeting/event set-ups; labor support for special projects and for the skilled trades, etc.).
  • Seek initiatives, incentives, grants and other opportunities for special funding or cost sharing from outside entities or vendors.
  • Schedule and participate in logistics meeting with Events and Sales team.
  • Maintain inventory of Grounds and Events supplies and equipment in all designated storage areas; coordinate supply ordering and equipment rentals as necessary.
  • Use databases and scheduled meetings to identify, communicate and plan workload including scheduling, implementing and inventorying needs for routine Grounds department and event-specific tasks; resolve scheduling, implementation and inventory issues as necessary.
  • Set work standards and inspect work in progress and upon completion.
  • Continue evaluation of Grounds department sevice needs for events, facilities and grounds; schedule implement service improvements as needed.
  • Foster a respectful collaborative work environment with coworkers, other departments and vendors.
  • Maintain routine records and prepare reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises 10+ full-time employees and 5+ seasonal employees in the Grounds Department and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (B. A. or B.S.) from an accredited four-year college or university; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid WA Driver's License required.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Competency in basic Microsoft Windows and Office tools, including and e-mail, as well as familiarity with customized and other databases.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL ABILITY

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The position requires an ability to walk or transit across the 92-acre facility in variable weather conditions and enter non-public behind the scenes staff areas. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear; stand, walk or sit; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and taste or smell.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
