Share Email Opening Title Electrical Engineer 4 – Electric Motor Design 2019-106  Astronics Subsidiary AES   Location Kirkland, WA   Description JOB SUMMARY The overriding business objective for this position will be to help successfully develop new power generation products that support AES being a world-recognized leader in aircraft electrical power systems for small to mid-sized business jets, UAV's and rotorcraft. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Demonstrate technical expertise in electromagnetic machine design. The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding technical abilities in fields related to design, test, and manufacture of electrical motors and generators. Critical knowledge includes magnetic principles, stator and rotor design, component selection, design for aircraft engine environment, and rotating machine manufacturing processes. These skills will allow the candidate to develop various generator designs that meet weight, cost, performance and manufacturability requirements. This involves understanding impact of design decisions on all requirements and applying a continuous focus on meeting requirements from concept design through product qualification. The successful candidate will deliver AES optimized designs that result in superior products for a competitive marketplace. Goal and Schedule Oriented. The ultimate objective for this position is to develop new products requiring an attention to detail and focus to satisfy tasks in the timeline that supports internal and external customers. This requires aptitude to complete both individual and team tasks in a timely manner but also commitment to support project goals. This trait will support product time to market and build a strong confidence with customers, both internal and external. Evidence of this factor will be an understanding of the importance of meeting schedule deadlines, ability to learn and adapt to new tasks quickly, taking initiative to fill gaps on team projects, and assist other team members to support program goals. Development Engineering Skills. The primary tasks of the successful candidate will be to work on development of new products in the Astronics Aircraft Power and Control product line. Development tasks consist of developing products from concept to certification. Skills required include detail design and documentation, environmental test support, failure analysis, and production support. These efforts require creativity, expertise in engineering design software tools, hands on testing, problem solving and decision making. The successful candidate will have expertise in all these categories. This requires an ability to learn quickly and a commitment to multiple engineering disciplines. The successful candidate will be able to take responsibility for electrical design on a development program within one month of hire. Develop a cooperative working relationship with internal engineering resources. The successful candidate will contribute to a collaborative relationship with engineering staff at Astronics. This involves working with mechanical engineers and other disciplines including systems, electrical and test engineering. The successful candidate will promote cooperation among team members, provide technical concepts and feedback, assist in development of less experienced team members, and ask questions of experienced staff to develop their own skills. In summary, the successful candidate will have a significant impact to the growth of Astronics. This position may require knowledge of SOX / 404 internal audit controls and related documentation. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education/Experience: Requires bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or other technical field and at least 8 years related experience in: Design of high speed electric motors and generators Electromagnetic analysis experience Expertise with electric machine design software tools (ANSYS, MotorCAD, SPEED) Specific experience with induction, permanent magnet and synchronous generator architectures Structural design experience of motors/generators Cooling design experience of motors/generators Design for Manufacturability, applied to electric machine design Experience with design for high temperature aircraft requirements ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Must be a US Person (under ITAR rules) to be eligible.
