Purpose of Division:

The Division of Public Relations manages the publishing and distribution of the corporation's premier print and electronic publications, and videos. These include the annual report and specialized e-newsletters such as the NeighborWorks@Work and the NetWorks (for NeighborWorks organization executive directors and board presidents). The division also provides graphic design support to other business units throughout the corporation, provides overall content management, site development and design for NeighborWorks America websites, and coordinates the corporation's Web strategy. This involves establishing and implementing corporate-wide policies, strategies and guidelines, and coordinating audience and strategies that guide the corporation's Web presence. Public Relations also coordinates the delivery of related Web-based services to the corporation and the NeighborWorks network.

Position Summary:

This position encompasses a range of writing and editing responsibilities in the development of print and electronic communication materials to advance the corporation's strategic goals and objectives. The Communications Writer assists with designing and coordinating company communications, and is responsible for maintaining policies and procedures, using electronic publishing technology. Work requires the application of professional editorial skills (e.g., research, planning, reporting, writing, fact-checking, editing and proofreading) in support of the corporation's resource development and general communication efforts.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Serves as principal writer for a wide variety of print and electronic communication pieces that tell the story of the corporation's efforts, value and impact. These include but are not limited to case studies, profiles and feature stories; marketing collateral and newsletters; and web content.
  • Gathers information through research, attending meetings and conferences, and conducting interviews, and develops content for publication.
  • Assists with creating and maintaining communication programs that effectively describe and promote the organization and its programs/services including brochures, company or product fact sheets, or other promotional products.
  • Edits, rewrites and repurposes communications pieces, ensuring that the material is appropriately aligned with audiences, objectives and messages.
  • Writes, prepares, and/or reviews articles to be used in company publications and distributions. Coordinates the preparation of company publications and articles by confirming artwork, verifying facts, and assisting in final review. Makes sure all work follows editorial policies and standards.
  • Support digital media team with editorial maintenance of website and other properties as appropriate, under direction.
  • Designs personal work plan and timelines to provide timely delivery of communications products.
  • Creates and develops high-quality, substantive, well-researched copy and ensure consistency with NeighborWorks mission and messages.
  • Writes and edits content for general communications purposes as assigned.

Other duties include:

  • Prepares presentations and/or speeches geared toward employees and external audiences. Coordinates the development of communications materials with internal resources and with external vendors as necessary.
  • Participates on planning teams.
  • Serves as project manager for specific print and electronic communications projects as assigned.
  • Represents PR Division at various internal and external meetings and events.
  • Provides editorial direction and best practices on projects across different divisions and subject matter.
  • Performs other responsibilities as assigned.

Nature of Work Contacts:
NeighborWorks® America staff, network member organizations, vendors, and national partners. Officials and/or staff from local, state, regional and national intermediaries; and others, including government agencies. General public, including customers and partners of local NeighborWorks organizations.

Position Requirements

Required Minimum Qualifications:
(a) Education: A bachelor’s degree with a focus on liberal arts, communications, English, journalism, writing, or a related field is required. Will consider relevant professional experience in lieu of a degree.

(b) Experience: At least seven (7) years’ professional writing experience, preferably in one of the following areas: marketing communications, development communications or public relations.

(c) Licenses, Certifications: None required.

(d) Competencies, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Strong research, fact-checking, written, oral and technology related communications skills necessary, including essential interpretive, and interpersonal skills; Experience with AP Style; Copy writing and editing expertise; Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and successfully interact with people at all management and support levels, within and outside the organization, as well as people of diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Exerts the highest level of professionalism; Ability to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels, including: staff, managers, directors, consultants, donors and potentially nonprofit executives and other partners; Proven flexibility, resourcefulness and ability to multi-task, set priorities for multiple projects, meet deadlines under and work independently and as part of a team; Possess previous project management experience. Ability to plan, organize and carry out communication projects; Ability to conceptualize, package and produce content for publications, web sites and other media; CMS skills are a plus; High level of accuracy and attention to detail in finished work; Ability to travel as required.

(f) Technology: PowerPoint presentations, Excel and SharePoint.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in a non-profit environment is preferred, knowledge of affordable housing and/or community development a plus.

Working Conditions:
(a) Travel: up to 15%.
(b) Physical/Sensory Demands: Fast paced working environment, extensive computer usage. Light lifting up to 25 lbs.

Special Provisions:
Occasional work outside of normal business hours, such as weekends and evenings may be required during critical deadline periods.
