Summer Camp Counselor

Position Summary:

The Camp Counselor is responsible for caring for and supervising their assigned campers as well as maintaining a positive, clean, and safe environment. This position reports to a Cabin Leader and Camp Director as well as Program Specialists when in activity areas.

Essential Job Functions:

Camper Care:

  • Learns physical/mental needs and likes/dislikes of each assigned camper
  • Supervises and assists campers with daily activities living as needed, including transferring, bathing, feeding, dressing, and other tasks
  • Promotes and assists campers in participation of activities
  • Supervises cabin during rest and night duty as scheduled
  • Maintains a positive and enthusiastic attitude

Camp Living Environment:

  • Assists in daily and weekly cabin and camp clean-ups
  • Shows and encourages respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities
  • Sets an example for campers and others through cleanliness, punctuality, sharing, sportsmanship, and other appropriate behaviors
  • Fulfills assigned roles in enforcing safety regulations and emergency procedures

Administrative Duties:

  • Maintains all camper paperwork as assigned
  • Prepares for and actively participates in staff orientation
  • Attends all staff and cabin meetings
  • Follows all camp rules and regulations

  • Camp activity areas including swimming pools, creek, recreation hall, dining hall, and many other outdoor areas
  • Indoor and outdoor work in varying temperatures and climates including heat, rain, wind.
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 18 years of age, high school diploma or GED required;
  • One year of college or equivalent preferred
  • Enthusiastic interest in working with children and adults with various disabilities
  • Ability and willingness to work 12 days straight
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people while demonstrating respect and consideration for staff and campers
  • Ability to communicate effectively and positively with staff members and campers to provide a safe and healthy environment
  • Ability to enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures
  • Physical ability to transfer campers in and out of wheelchairs, push people in wheelchairs, and assist campers with activities of daily living
  • Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to daily camp activities
  • Appreciation and respect for the outdoors
  • Enthusiasm, creativity, and a sense of humor

After Hire Requirements:

  • Knowledge of Camp Easter Seals UCP programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness and manage it consistently and fairly.
  • Ability to adequately meet campers’ needs or be able to direct them to someone who can.

Essential physical requirements:

  • Must possess the visual acuity to develop written correspondence and determine accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of talking, hearing, using a computer.
  • Must be able to speak audibly and write legibly.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more.
  • Physical ability to transfer campers in and out of wheelchairs, push people in wheelchairs, and assist campers with activities of daily living.
