As the Director of Human Resources you are a certified Human Resource professional with a background in providing strategic direction and management of Human Resources within multiple offices. Through your experience, creativity, and vision you will support leadership toward making our growing professional services firm the firm of choice for our current and future team members. This role will report to the President/CEO and will be part of the management team. This position is based in Grand Rapids, but will guide the human resources strategy for over 240 professionals in the Grand Rapids, Michigan and Charlotte, North Carolina offices.


  • Provide proactive leadership in the development, coordination and implementation of all Human Resource related functions including; talent recruitment and retention, employee relations, salary administration, classification and structure, benefits, performance management, training and development, policies, and communications.
  • Serve as a senior advisor to leadership on human resource issues.
  • Lead and annually update compensation programs; analyze compensation in relation to internal and external benchmarks; conduct annual salary surveys as needed.
  • Partner with leadership/management to communicate various policies, procedures, activities, events, business updates, etc.
  • Continually assess the competitiveness of all compensation and benefits programs and practices against relevant comparable companies, industries, and markets, in order to fulfill Progressive AE's total compensation philosophy, and to successfully recruit and retain top talent.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement personnel policies and procedures; prepare and maintain handbook on policies and procedures.
  • Conduct exit reviews and analyze turnover data.
  • Lead the in-voluntary and voluntary off-boarding termination process.
  • Maintain compliance with all federal and state regulations regarding employment.
  • Model positive behaviors, values, mutual respect, collaboration, and ethical standards of the practice.


  • Lead effective meetings and work with leaders and team members to make human resource initiatives and projects successful.
  • Maintain Human Resource Information System records; identify, recommend and oversee implementation of HR technology upgrades
  • Work closely with Culture by Design working committees in the areas of diversity/equity/inclusion, wellness, social engagement, community outreach and other concentrations as they provide activities that engage our team members.
  • Work closely with leaders, managers and the corporate recruiter to forecast future staffing needs; develop staffing options and strategies including regular, part-time, seasonal, and contingent workforce options.
  • Oversee the Corporate Recruiter role in recruitment and selection efforts for all employees; oversee the interview, screening, and recruitment of candidates; along with the Corporate Recruiter manage the candidate and applicant pool. Work with the Corporate Recruiter in selection of extraordinary people who are highly capable, energetic, positive, results focused, and who contribute to our enjoyable and dynamic culture. Assist the Corporate Recruiter with hires that require external agency partners throughout the selection process, as appropriate.
  • Oversee the Benefits Administrator and responsibilities for all employee benefit plans and programs; with the Benefit Administrator manage related benefit vendor partnerships; ensure compliance of all benefit programs; ensure the maintenance of all updates to benefit related documents; oversee FMLA claim process; work with HR team to educate employees regarding benefit programs; resolve issues regarding employee benefits if Benefit Administrator cannot resolve; and oversee overall benefit administration duties and tasks in partnership with accounting group.
  • Hire, supervise, train, evaluate, motivate, and develop Human Resources team members.


  • Ensure that all activities within the Human Resource function fall within the budget created at the beginning of the fiscal year.

Staff Development:

  • Oversee new employee orientations and on-boarding activities in order to provide a welcoming, comprehensive, and productive Onboarding experience for each new hire.
  • Lead career pathing program and path to principal activities; enhance and monitor performance evaluation programs and identify and implement development and training opportunities associated with workforce needs and business strategy.
  • Provide leadership, management, and team member coaching regarding performance and other employee related issues; acts as a coach and trainer to improve skills and abilities within the company.
  • Equip new leaders and managers with the tools and skills to effectively ensure employee behaviors align with diversity, leadership, learning, and trust.
  • Facilitate employee engagement activities; engagement surveys, stay interviews, Employee Assistance Center (EAC) offerings, etc.

Commitment to Client Service:

  • Ensure the Human Resource team provides excellent service to their internal customers and adds value for their team members.
  • Develops and maintains an open relationship and communications with employees, monitoring morale and culture, and advising leaders and managers of opportunities to enhance communication and employee engagement.

Business Development/Marketing:

  • Work closely with the marketing team to ensure that all internal and external communication tools are professional and aligned with employer brand.
  • Work closely with the marketing team to ensure that we are reaching candidates with the latest technology opportunities and applications.
Position Requirements


  • Your Degree: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Your Certifications: Senior Professional in Human Resources (SHRM-SCP and/or SPHR).
  • Your Knowledge and Experience:
    • You have a minimum 9 years of experience in a key leadership role that includes Human Resources in a multiple office firm environment. Experience in a professional services firm is highly desired.
    • You are a proactive professional with evidence of having worked successfully as a true strategic business partner to leadership team members within an organization.
    • You are an experienced strategic, forward thinking, creative leader with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.
    • You exhibit a professional, yet collaborative and flexible style with a strong service mentality.
    • You exhibite a high level of integrity, confidentiality, dependability, and a strong sense of urgency and results orientation.
    • You are aahands-on professional with the proven ability to work in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
    • You have excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate, manage, and relate well at all levels of the organization.
  • Your Technical Skills:
    • You have proficiency in Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Outlook required.
    • You have strong knowledge and experience with implementing or improving Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS).
    • You have experience with dashboard communication, preferred.
