Public Information Officer 

Description

Assists with developing and implementing an integrated internal and external communications strategy that is aligned with the City's vision and mission statements and that proactively promotes the City's initiatives. Serves as media relations advisor to staff and works in partnership with the City's various departments in order to ensure consistency and effectiveness of messaging, both internally and externally.

Contributes to the development and implementation of a long-term strategic Citywide Communications Plan.

Leads external communication efforts, including ensuring consistency in presenting City information to the public in a timely and effective manner.

Coordinates City media relations, including preparing staff for media contacts and events. Anticipates media responses and prepares spokespersons accordingly.

Design, develop, organize and control communication of the City's vision and mission to internal and external audiences.

Manages the dissemination of prompt, accurate emergency public information during emergency and disaster situations. Participates as a communications consultant on the Disaster/Emergency Preparedness Committee and provides advice and service as needed.

Responsible for developing initiatives and methods to maximize internal communications for employees.

Utilizes print, web, social media and TV media in order to enhance the City's image and communicate City issues, actions and services. Collaborates with staff to utilize CNS6 for furthering City's communications initiatives.

Prepares and edits written publications, including articles, features, media releases and other publications and presentations.

Manages the City of Thomasville's social media presence by editing, publishing and sharing daily content for the purpose of building meaningful connections and encouraging community engagement.

Monitors the City of Thomasville social media pages to ensure prompt responses are given to all user posts and messages.

Develops and recommends new communications methods and enhancements to better achieve City goals.

Develops marketing tools and initiatives related to City services.

Participates in the development of marketing collateral as required, to include advertisements, presentations, brochures, etc.

Develops relationships with media representatives in order to best communicate the City's vision and mission.

 
Position Requirements

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field and minimum of three years of experience in media relations and corporate communications.

Principles, methods, procedures and strategies concerning public information, communications and community relations.

Methods, techniques and procedures related to the preparation of news releases.

Correct English usage, vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

News media and other informational distribution resources.

The operations, services and activities of the City’s divisions.

Graphic design software and website maintenance and development.

Communicate orally and in writing sufficiently to express ideas, thoughts, instructions and rules to staff, City and community.

Compose difficult correspondence, memoranda, press releases and publications creatively and independently.

Maintain confidentiality of privileged information obtained during the course of work.

Meet the public in situations requiring tact, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 
Physical/Environmental Requirements Mobility to work in typical office settings using standard office equipment is required. In addition, vision to read printed materials and computer screen and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
