Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant
OVERVEIW: Responsible for providing weekly clinical consultation and services to Lower Elwha Early Childhood program staff and clients.
Work Location: Lower Elwha Head Start
Supervised: Head Start Director
Position Status: Consultant
Salary Grade: Grade 18, DOQ
Work Schedule: Weekly consultation
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION OF JOB:
- Provide Mental Health interventions to children both individually and/or in small groups with parent permission
- Provide Mental Health interventions to staff and families as initial support
- Consult with staff regarding behavioral and emotional interventions and support services
- Review all developmental, health, sensory, and behavioral screenings
- Be available to provide staff assistance in the planning of mental health activities and interventions in the classroom
- Provide consultation to staff to support their ability to perform their job duties
- Performs observations, consultation, screenings, and trainings
- Participates in staff meetings and follow through on staffing recommendations for participants
- Provide written documentation of observations, services, and referrals within two weeks of activity in accordance with agency, tribal, state, and federal guidelines.
- Provides advocacy, support services, information, and referrals for necessary mental health services
- Collaborates with clients and providers, as appropriate
- Maintains professional boundaries with clients and staff, while integrating into the community in a collaborative, trustworthy manner
- Maintains a professional image within the community at all times
- Abides by the ethics set forth by the American Counseling Association code of ethics
MINIMUM REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of a Master's degree in a social service or behavioral health field
- A current Washington State Counselor credential or professional license
- Meets the standard for either Mental Health Professional designation, Child Mental Health Specialist designation, or Minority Mental Health Specialist designation
- Documented training in play therapy
- At least two years of experience providing consulting services, counseling, and/or group services to young children and their families
- Experience working with multi-ethnic populations
- A working knowledge of mental health treatment modalities in Clallam County
- Experience developing behavior plans and interventions to promote development of social and emotional skills in children ages 5 and under

- Knowledge of community resources and referral/follow-up processes
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Basic computer proficiency
