SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will be the world’s premier institution dedicated to the art and science of movies. Located at Wilshire and Fairfax in Los Angeles, the Museum will be simultaneously immersive, experimental, educational, and entertaining. More than a museum, this dynamic film center will offer unparalleled experiences and insights into movies and moviemaking.

We are seeking a creative, energetic, and experienced professional to lead our youth programs. Reporting to the Director of Education and Public Engagement, the responsibilities include implementing engaging, participatory, and multisensory programs that serve youth aged 0-18. The position will collaborate on programs for young visitors to learn and connect to the history and artistry of film and film making. They will also create intergenerational learning opportunities for caregivers and families of youth. Expect to lead partnership initiatives with community and organizations serving youth across the Los Angeles area, while working to reach a broad and diverse community.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Conceptualize and implement a wide range of programs including but not limited to family day programs, in-gallery activities, teen programs, and community events.
  • Supervise the creation of visitor-centric approaches to teen engagement and implement ongoing and consistent teen programs with the goal of building a local community of teen participants.
  • Oversee engagement with youth in developmentally appropriate ways and use programs to provoke wonder and foster an appreciation and understanding of filmmaking and film, create personal connections to the art of storytelling and instill empathy through inclusion of multiple perspectives.
  • Manage the development of active learning environments and utilize multiple spaces including the 1,300 square foot Shirley Temple Education Studio, galleries, and theaters to engage small and large groups of youth.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Education and Public Engagement, develop evaluation instruments and conduct evaluations of programs.
  • Lead a team of part-time educators, maintaining a strong training program and team cohesion and effectiveness.

 
Position Requirements
  • BA degree in, education, art history, film studies, film making or related field required
  • 3-5 years’ experience leading the development of youth programs in an art, film, or museum setting
  • Strong background in museum interpretive techniques and educational practice required
  • Fluency with Los Angeles area including arts organizations and community programs
  • Artistic and technical skills in filmmaking
  • Project management skills
  • Strong staff development skills
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to budget accurately and track spending
