About the Organization The Houston SPCA, founded in 1924, is Houston's first and largest animal protection organization and shelter. Our mission is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. The Houston SPCA is a private, non-profit charity, funded entirely by donations, which receives no funding from the Government, United Way or national animal groups.

Description

Reports to: Vice President of Development

Primary Purpose:

The Director of Direct Marketing is responsible for overseeing integrity of donor data to maximize donor value and ensure proper donor stewardship is possible and timely. The Director of Direct Marketing drives the strategy, sets goals and is accountable for results of all outbound donor solicitations including mail, online, telemarketing and future channels.

 

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Provides leadership and direction for soliciting annual gifts via direct response, including with grateful patients.
  • Provides leadership and direction to all outbound donor solicitations, including mail, online, telemarketing and future channels
  • Works collaboratively with Marketing and Communications, Development, and Finance staff to advance the Houston SPCA’s donor support.
  • Develops and executes a direct response program. Manages all aspects of annual fund planning and execution, including vendor management, donor acquisition, communication strategy, budget and logistics.
  • Collaborates across the organization on cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and gift officer portfolios.
  • Ability to think strategically in the acquisition, engagement, and stewardship of donors.
  • Strong project management and problem-solving skills.
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, skill and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred.
  • Minimum five years of demonstrated success managing a Direct Marketing program for a non-profit organization.
  • Demonstrated ability in thinking strategically to acquire, engage, upgrade, and steward donors.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, ability to work easily and effectively with a wide range of people including major donors, board members, fellow staff members, corporate, foundation, and other nonprofit representatives.
  • Willingness to travel to build donor relationships and awareness of the Houston SPCA’s mission.
  • Sensitivity to and respect for the privacy rights of donors in all communications.
  • Passion for the mission of the Houston SPCA.
  • Proven aptitude for strategic planning, marketing, donor relations/stewardship, and grant writing in a collaborative manner with board and staff.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and respond to multiple demands concurrently with excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and quality.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule including weekend and evening shifts.
