POSITION SUMMARY: BASIC FUNCTION

The GL Accountant will be responsible for maintaining accurate GL account balances and coding in accordance with GAAP, full cycle close, developing and enhancing system and process controls, intercompany transactions and eliminations, and other reports as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strong participation in the month-end close process, including journal entries, account reconciliation, while applying GAAP accounting to effectively report accurate GL balances
  • Prepares journal entries, including proper GL account, department, location and project cost coding with appropriate supporting documentation.
  • Reviews, analyzes and reconciles cash accounts for assigned entities.
  • Responsible for select balance sheet account reconciliations (deposits, debt, other receivables, etc.)
  • Analyzes Month-End GL to ensure accurate GL account, location and department coding by accounting staff; documents reasons for account variations from prior month.
  • Reviews and approves Accounts Payable invoices processed by others to ensure proper coding and classification for fixed assets or operational expenses.
  • Timely and accurate accounting of new fixed assets purchases and disposals/retirements
  • Reconciling Project Accounting with GL Accounting and reviewing balances for reasonableness
  • Prepares periodical fixed assets/CIP reports for parent company reporting.
  • Prepares all close related CIP journals and reports.
  • Calculating capitalized interest on open CIP projects
  • Analyzing open CIP projects and identifying projects that are ready to be placed in service
  • Reviewing the accuracy of system calculated depreciation for GAAP and Tax
  • Reporting depreciation fall off schedule for GAAP and Tax
  • Closing Oracle Projects and Fixed Asset modules as a part of the month end close process
  • Select balance sheet account reconciliations (CIP, Fixed Assets, etc.)
  • Document changes to fixed asset processes and procedures.
  • Analyze financial transactions for capitalization
  • Prepares Prepaid and Accrued Property Tax Journals
  • Prepares journals related to fuel and inventory reconciliations
  • Reviews Asset Retirement Obligation and creates adjustments
  • Maintains monthly amortization schedules.
  • Maintains intercompany transactions and identifies eliminating transactions for consolidated financials.
  • Interfaces with other departments in the education and enforcement of accounting policies and/or procedures and well as providing information and support to other departments as necessary.
  • Maintain records of all financial documents with appropriate supporting materials.
  • Use, update and create software documentation for the training and continuance of the company.
  • Performs special accounting projects as assigned.
  • Performs regular analysis of system and procedural efficiencies to ensure financial statement integrity and to identify opportunities to improve processes and create efficiencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Able to be highly confidential.
  • Excellent understanding and working knowledge of GAAP and Accounting Practices.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Proficient with computers to include the utilization of Microsoft programs such as Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
  • Oracle system or other large ERP experience preferred
  • Manages stress and/or fast-pace effectively in a multi-task deadline oriented environment.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated, dedicated, flexible, good team player.
  • Initiative and ability to own projects from start to finish.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • BS Degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited school
  • Minimum of 5 years public or private accounting experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in Fixed Asset and Project accounting
  • Sound understanding of Fixed Asset processes and accounting including journal entries.
  • Solid understanding or previous experience with intercompany transactions and eliminations preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Primarily sitting with some walking, standing, and bending.
  • Able to hear and speak into a telephone.
  • Close visual work on a computer terminal.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate any required computer keyboard, mouse, and other technical instruments.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs.

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Standard office; extensive daily usage of workstation or computer.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess a current, valid state issued driver’s license
  • Regular, predictable attendance is essential for satisfactory performance.
