About the Region

Canine Companions for Independence was founded in Santa Rosa, California in 1975. The National Headquarters and Northwest Training Center are located on the Jean and Charles Schulz Campus in Santa Rosa, California. The Schulz Campus, named after generous supporters Jean and Charles Schulz, opened in 1996. The Northwest Region serves people in Northern California, Northern Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska.

SUMMARY: The Assistant Controller will be responsible for assisting with the oversight of daily finance, accounting and reporting activities. This position will work closely with the Controller to ensure accurate and timely business operations, accounting, and financial activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed:

Finance and Accounting Tasks

  • Primary responsibility for leading bank reconciliation process for Controller and CFO review.
  • Oversight of accounts payable including purchase orders, invoices, coding, and processing.
  • Assist in development of new PO, invoicing, and inventory management and control processes.
  • Oversight and management of accounting role in payroll operations, payroll reconciliation, fringe benefits, etc.
  • Assist Controller in the preparation of complex journal entries including month-end accruals and allocating costs among departments.
  • Assist in managing financial accounting system including development and production of custom reports and dashboards.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of operational accounting procedures and documentation of data flow.
  • Contribute to the analysis and review of income and expenses to insure accurate coding.
  • Assist in the month end closing and financial reporting process including account analysis and reconciliation.
  • Assist in special projects as necessary

EXPERIENCE: 3 to 5 years of increasingly responsible accounting experience including financial statement preparation and account reconciliation. Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor junior staff. Solid knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles; and nonprofit experience preferred. Strong Excel skills and financial accounting systems experience required.

EDUCATION: BA/BS in Accounting required. CPA or advanced degree in business preferred.
