GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Guide and coordinate the ecumenical relationships of the national setting of the United Church of Christ. Nurture ecumenical leadership throughout the church.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Nurture and coordinate the ecumenical work of the UCC through involvement in full communion relationships, partnerships, councils of churches, theological dialogues, and other ecumenical initiatives.
  • Represent the United Church of Christ in ecumenical settings and strengthen UCC participation through broader recruitment and more intensive training of representatives.
  • Interpret to the UCC the theology, history and practice of the ecumenical movement in written and oral presentations including workshops, sermons, addresses, articles, etc.
  • Advise the other national and conference leaders on ecumenical policy.
  • Build and nurture an informed and vital network among ecumenically active members of the UCC and recruit young leadership.
  • Work collaboratively with others to develop and implement leadership development initiatives for youth and young adults.
  • Encourage interfaith dialogue and cooperation.
  • Conceptualize and prepare material to interpret program objectives.
  • Promote the program’s positive public image by responding in writing and orally on a timely basis to inquiries for information, accepting speaking engagements, and serving as a resource.
  • Contribute to the effectiveness of work teams by fostering a spirit of cooperation and accomplishing assigned tasks.
  • Prepare and administer the budget for ecumenical delegations ensuring good stewardship of financial resources.
  • As necessary, take leadership in designing and conducting orientation and/or training events.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • A master’s degree in theology or ability equal to that based on study and experience.
  • Member of a local church of the United Church of Christ.
  • Familiarity with the history, theology and practice of the ecumenical movement and the history, theology and witness of ecumenical partners.
  • Commitment to and theological understanding of mission in its broad range of concerns; ability to articulate and witness to one=s faith perspective.
  • Understanding of the polity and structures of the United Church of Christ, the Christian Church Disciples of Christ, and other ecumenical partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to think and write theologically
  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to pluralism in the workplace as well as in one's understanding of mission.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently.
  • Demonstrated written and oral English language skills, including ability to conceptualize and develop print resources; public speaking skills and knowledge of a second language when applicable.
  • Competency in leadership planning, development and training.
  • Demonstrated administrative ability.
  • Ability to travel within the United States and globally as necessary.
  • Computer literate in word processing.

  • This position is based in Cleveland, Ohio and will require relocation.
