GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Humanitarian and Development Ministries Team Leader will have primary responsibility for identifying and interpreting ministries of UCC engagement with refugees, asylum seekers, sustainable development, and programs of full-time volunteers/interns and mission groups serving within the United States, as well as oversight of UCC engagement with disaster ministries within the United States and with global partners.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conceptualize and develop a plan for relating disaster response and recovery (in cooperation with UCC Disaster Ministries Executive), sustainable development, refugee resettlement, and personal engagement through volunteer opportunities in the United States to the bold, inspirational, goals and strategies of the United Church of Christ.
  • Prepare and manage the ONE Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) budget to ensure the integrity of the offering based on its criteria for purposes both of disbursement decisions and impact evaluation. In cooperation with Global Ministries' area offices, create and implement protocol for responding to Global Ministries' bi-lateral partner requests. In consultation with worldwide partner organizations, take the UCC lead in creating protocol and deciding on project/program support for OGHS.
  • Serve as primary UCC national staff liaison with multi-national organizations related to sustainable development, micro credit, refugee resettlement and international disaster relief, response and recovery. These include, but are not limited to: Foods Resource Bank, Heifer International, Oikocredit, Ecumenical Church Loan Fund and the Freedom from Hunger micro-finance loan program. Primary responsibilities include annual support grants and decisions about UCC involvement in general and UCC-specific funding proposals from each organization. Maintain programmatic relationship with appropriate Church World Service offices and staff.
  • Promote OGHS by interacting with the public on how OGHS is enabling the engagement of the United Church of Christ in disaster, sustainable development and refugee ministries. In collaboration with other Humanitarian and Development team members, conceptualize and prepare promotional and interpretative resources for OGHS and supervise staff in the creation/promotion of an endowment fund for OGHS.
  • Coordinate the national network of the UCC Young Adult Service Communities and Summer Communities of Service with regard to conceptualization, program and host site development, and promotion.
  • Maintain relationships with and seek out new relationships with domestic mission trip sites for all types of mission trips including settings for immersion, service learning, and disaster recovery. Encourage local church participation and holistic engagement.
  • Conceptualize, plan, manage, and evaluate the Partners in Service program of individual volunteers serving with individual agencies, including volunteers of multiple generations, international volunteers and Global Mission Interns serving in United States' settings. Maintain relationships, develop new placement sites, and coach sit supervisors.
  • Interpret UCC Volunteer Ministries networks and programming to UCC constituencies and ecumenical partners, and represent the UCC in ecumenical volunteer programs and coalitions such as: Ecumenical Diaconal Year Network, Volunteers Exploring Vocation of the Fund for Theological Education.
  • Maintain oversight and ensure policies are followed by the Humanitarian and Development Ministries' budget.
  • Oversee and supervise OGHS, UCC disaster and volunteer ministries programs and staff. In cooperation with other staff, develop program goals and objectives and evaluate results; provide leadership in the development and monitoring of the team's budget; review and approve expenditures taking appropriate action when needed.
  • Identify and monitor independent contractors for designated programming and projects.
  • Interview, hire, train, supervise, coach, counsel, evaluate and discipline staff adhering to equal opportunity employment and affirmative action guidelines and principles.
  • Serve as a member of the Mission Planning Council and Mission Advisory Council, participate in developing plans and programs for integrating the life and work of the WCM with other UCC ministries and with UCC ecumenical partners.
  • Participate in the organizational and staff life of the WCM and in collaboration with Global Ministries programs and people.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • A graduate degree in theology and/or international development or equivalent combination of academic study and experience.
  • A commitment to and theological understanding of global and domestic mission in their broad range of concerns; ability to promote and interpret and ecumenical witness and vision of mission.
  • Understanding of UCC polity and structures, including conference and ecumenical structures, understanding of, and support for partnership with Christian Church (Disciples) through CGMB, and with other UCC full communion partners.
  • Understanding of international and national church and NGO agencies roles in responding to disasters as well as understanding of sustainable development methods.
  • Experience in the field of volunteerism.
  • Demonstrated financial, program development/management leadership, human relations and public relations skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, cultural and religious settings with commitment to pluralism within the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission; demonstrated ability to function effectively in a team environment including group consensus decision-making.
  • Ability to travel within the U.S. and globally.
  • Computer literacy skills.
