About the Organization The mission of Fenway Health is to enhance the wellbeing of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQIA+) community and all people in our neighborhoods and beyond through access to the highest quality health care, education, research, and advocacy. Fenway Health was founded in 1971 and has grown from a less than 10 person operation in the basement of a building near the Boston Fens to one of the largest LGBT-focused organizations in the world. It consists of three main centers:

• Fenway Community Health Center, our clinical arm, which is a federally qualified health center that operates three clinic sites (Fenway:1340, Fenway:South End, and the Sidney Borum, Jr. Health Center) in the Boston area and provides over 30,000 patients with primary and specialty medical care, behavioral health care, optometry care, and dental care;

• The Fenway Institute, our research/training/education/policy development arm, which houses numerous research initiatives as well as the National LGBT Education Project, the LGBT Aging Project, the National Center for Innovation in HIV Care, and the Center for Population Research in LGBT Health; and

• AIDS Action, our HIV/AIDS service organization, which provides nonclinical services (case management, housing and legal assistance, outreach, peer support) to people living with HIV/AIDS and operates numerous programs focusing on HIV/STD prevention/testing/treatment, including the Access (drug user health program), TransCEND (transgender peer support and risk reduction program), and Youth on Fire (drop-in center for homeless and street-involved youth) programs.

Under the primary supervision of the ATN (Adolescent Trials Network) Study Coordinator, the Research Assistant will implement marketing, communication and recruitment plans that reflect ATN research needs with an ultimate goal of community education, participant recruitment, interdepartmental collaboration and research promotion. They will also work with other research staff in implementing an HIV prevention trial enrolling transgender and gender non-conforming youth.

Representative Duties:

1. Conducts Study Visits Using Established Protocols

  • Performs specified study procedures according to protocols, which includes but is not limited to phlebotomy, vital signs, obtaining informed consent, basis physical assessments.
  • Processes laboratory specimens as needed.
  • Conducts protocol specific qualitative interviews with participants.
  • Assists with medical/study procedures as is required.
  • Provide telephone triage for study participants regarding medical, mental health or social issues.

2. Recruitment and Outreach Activity targeting transgender and gender non-conforming youth

  • Identify and conduct outreach and education in community spaces (organizations, social events, students groups, recreational venues, etc.) where recruitment, research and services can effectively be promoted.
  • Develop and implement digital marketing and social media recruitment strategies that reflect TFI research needs (social networking sites, mobile applications, search engines, etc.)
  • Work and communicate interdepartmentally in order to collaborate in community outreach and educational efforts.
  • Assist in navigation of participants through initial stages of research participation process by conducting protocol specific prescreening activities (i.e. prescreening phone questionnaires, scheduling enrollment appointments, etc.)
  • Assist in retention efforts for enrolled participants (i.e. appointment reminder phone calls, etc.) as requested

3. Accurately Documents Study Protocol and Coordinates Research Studies

  • Completes Case Report Forms accurately and in a timely manner as is defined by study protocol.
  • Performs Quality Control checks of study documents and assures that corrections are made and documents as per site operating procedures.
  • Actively participates on study-related conference calls and attends study specific operations meetings as needed.
  • Informs Principal Investigator and Project director, when patients suffer an adverse events within 24 hours.
  • Maintains drug accountability records for each study in progress and according to protocol.
  • Maintains study participant accountability records for each study in progress and according to protocol. Communicates to study staff and PI.
  • Attends Research Department In-services/Meetings on a regular basis.

4. Utilizes written and verbal communication skills

  • Complete weekly recruitment reports
  • Informs PI, study team and sponsor of recruitment targets and milestones
  • Update recruitment/outreach calendar on a weekly and as needed basis.
  • Communicate outreach activities to TFI staff in order to collaborate on efforts.

5. Meets Agency Participatory Expectations

  • Adheres to all agency and departmental policies and procedures
  • Participates in quality assessment and improvement activities as requested
  • Adheres to the highest principles of patient and client confidentiality
  • Adheres to established safety policies, procedures and precautions; identifies potential or actual unsafe situations in the environment and takes measures to rectify the situation.
  • Attends all required meetings, in-services and professional trainings.
  • Maintains professional competence necessary to perform job responsibilities; maintains and provides agency with records of continuing education activities.
  • Serves on agency committees and in professional organizations when requested

Position Requirements


  • Previous recruitment, community education or outreach experience highly desired
  • Demonstrated cultural competency in relation to LGBTQ communities
  • Cultural competency/responsiveness, specifically the capacity to work with diverse community stakeholders and a willingness to learn from individuals from different backgrounds
  • Proven ability to meet and exceed internal and external customer and stakeholders expectations
  • Experience working with HIV/AIDS education and/or service organizations.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills and ability to meet deadlines within a team environment.
  • Highly creative abilities in problem-solving contexts
  • Strong oral communication skills including conducting presentations in a variety of contexts with a variety of audiences required
  • Experience working with an ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse work staff preferred

Physical Requirements:
Ability to meet the following physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodations:
