Description

Shared responsibility to manage all aspects of the medical and health related services for children in the residential treatment program. Coordinates psychiatry services with consulting psychiatrists for the children in residential program. Participates in training of staff in Blood Borne Pathogens and Medication Administration. Coordinates with kitchen supervisor to oversee special needs of nutritional services. Insures compliance with all licensing, contracts and accreditation standards related to medical services.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Makes daily rounds to check sick or injured children. Provides nursing care and makes decisions about referring to an outside physician.
  • Completes initial nursing assessments on residential youth within 24 hours of admission.
  • Conduct blood borne pathogens training at agency orientation meetings.
  • Insures compliance with all licensing, contract and accreditation standards related to medical services.
  • Perform nursing rounds daily or as needed.
  • Provides direct patient care, teaching, and counseling.
  • Provides TB testing for all agency employees, interns, volunteers, and new hires.
  • Conducts ongoing nursing assessments and initiate appropriate treatment referrals and follow-up.
  • Assists in the completion of required medical documentation in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Responds to unit staff questions related to medication administration and medication errors.
  • Ensures timely completion and documentation of annual PE, dental, exams, and mandated immunizations.
  • Monitors med administration, med tracking, med errors, med dispensing by direct care staff to youth.
  • Liaison between all medical providers and their support staff that serve the youth in residential setting.
  • Assures all federal, state, COA accreditation standards are met.
  • May participate in team meetings and leadership meetings.
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement.
  • Performs on-call duties and telephone triage duties.
  • May develop and present preventative health education to youth.
  • Carries out all other duties as designated by Medical Coordinator.
  • In coordination with Medical Coordinator and Clinical Director, may participate in education groups for children/youth in the Children's Home including:
    • Drug/ETOH abuse, effects, consequences
    • Abuse of Rx/OTC medications, effects
    • Illnesses-signs/symptoms - when to treat at home- when to contact health provider
    • OTC medications-uses-how to purchase cost effectively
    • STD-transmission-symptoms-treatment
    • Basic anatomy/physiology
    • Consequences of self-piercing/self-tattoos

Position Requirements

Education: RN / LPN

Experience: Experience with children preferred. Experience in psychiatric/mental health preferred.

Registration, licenses, certifications or special training: State of Michigan Licensure as a Registered Nurse/ Licensed Practical Nurse. Certification in CPR and First Aid (American Red Cross). A valid Michigan Driver License, access to reliable transportation and maintain appropriate insurance. TST (Tuberculin Skin Testing) Certification through county health department within 8 weeks of hire.

  • Emotionally able to work with information that may be traumatic in nature, as well as, work with individuals or families in crisis or experiencing trauma.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk up to 8 hours per shift.
  • Work involves talking, stooping, squatting, twisting, climbing, kneeling, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to sit and use computer workstation, including keyboard and visual display terminal for extended periods of time.
  • Noise in the work environment is usually moderately quiet but can be very loud at times.
  • Work in an environment with various degrees of discomfort.
  • Driving as needed throughout the day.
