Moving Image Cataloger Fall Intern

Description

Summary:

The Academy Film Archive in Hollywood is seeking applicants for a paid internship this Fall from students enrolled in archiving, library and information studies, moving image studies, or other conservation-related programs. Interns generally work two full days a week for ten weeks (about 120 to 140 hours total). There is a possibility the internship could continue into the Winter term. Students may pursue school credit if the internship meets their school's requirements.

The Academy is embarking on an ongoing cataloging effort to establish relationships between related collections content. In addition to moving image holdings of completed productions, AFA collects ancillary content like trailers, featurettes and production elements. The primary objective of this internship is to identify and link records for this ancillary content to records for their related completed film productions. The rules for relating the records vary according to the content. This project will offer the opportunity to become intimately familiar with the Film Archive's holdings and evolving cataloging practices as well as the chance to work in a multi-faceted collection management system.

Responsibilities:

  • Review and establish relationships of ancillary content pertaining to a single Work.
  • Develop a complex decision tree of adapting basic guidelines to idiosyncratic moving image content.
  • Perform necessary data cleanup in coordination with a Moving Image Cataloger, including the consolidation of records, revising title formatting and additional data entry.
  • Additional research and identification of archival content as needed.

Position Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Archiving, Library and Information Studies, Moving Image Studies or other conservation-related programs.
  • Minimum of one year of study toward a degree in a related field.
  • Interest in film history and knowledge of current archival and library cataloging practices and standards.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent attention to detail with strong written and verbal communication skills and problem-solving skills.
