Position Overview:

The Bloorview Research Institute at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital invite applications for a Scientist in the priority area of social justice, diversity and health policy pertaining to children and youth with disabilities and their families.

The scientist will create knowledge and catalyze change to enable participation and inclusion of young people within the environments where they and their families live, learn, play, and work.

In collaboration with disabled young people, their families, and other allies, the scientist will establish a research program aimed at influencing social change by reducing stigma, enabling social justice, promoting anti-oppression, creating more inclusive social and healthcare structures, and advocating for greater diversity.

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • The mechanisms that support inclusion of disabled young people, reduce stigma, support interdependence, challenge ableist assumptions and practices, and influence positive social, cultural, and political change.
  • The personal, social, political, and environmental determinants of childhood health and disability.
  • Critical research investigating how disability is understood, operationalized and addressed in health, education, and social care policy and practices; and developing opportunities, programs and interventions to transform systems.
  • Research investigating exclusion experienced by disabled children and their families, considering the intersections of diverse identities such as ability, gender, sexual orientation, age, race/indigeneity, class, and religion.
  • Innovative transdisciplinary methodologies that draw from diverse disciplines in the arts, humanities, social sciences, cultural studies and/or policy studies to better understand and meet young people's needs and preferences.
  • Transdisciplinary research that aligns with and advances critical disability studies to address ableism in health and social care and the community more broadly.
  • Research that promotes a better understanding of the experiences of Indigenous children with disabilities and their families.

It is expected that the scientist's program of research will align with one or more of the research institute's themes: exploring human dimensions of care and disability, developing and improving interventions, and understanding developmental diversity.

The successful candidate will:

  • lead an independent program of research that advances scholarship in childhood disability;
  • demonstrate an open and flexible approach to establishing and advancing collaborative relationships between researchers and clinical staff;
  • develop new knowledge that contributes to positive health and social outcomes for children;
  • adhere to tricouncil policies in the conduct of research and be current with all required training (e.g., TCPS2, CITI Responsible Conduct of Research);
  • partner with diverse young people to co-produce research questions, designs, and equitable solutions that are meaningful to their lives and circumstances;
  • develop lasting partnerships with stakeholders in education, government, and/or workplaces to bring knowledge to action, enabling more positive, diverse and inclusive futures for disabled young people;
  • consistently secure competitive extramural research funding (especially tricouncil funding);
  • attract and train a diverse group of graduate students;
  • authentically engage diverse clients and families, including racialized and Indigenous families;
  • publish high quality articles in the most well-respected journals of the field;
  • lead related knowledge translation activities, and
  • promote social justice and anti-oppressive research practices.


The scientist is expected to interface seamlessly with clinical and research teams at Holland Bloorview and must hold (or be eligible for) a professorial appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in a cognate department of the University of Toronto as well as a School of Graduate Studies appointment. Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent training in an appropriate specialization including but not limited to critical disabilities studies, sociology, social work, health or rehabilitation sciences, humanities/the arts, Indigenous studies, and or cultural studies. A record of transdisciplinary research and scholarship is preferred. Demonstrated innovation in research and a promising track record of scholarship are also required. Post-doctoral training or equivalent is preferred. Experience working with diverse populations is preferred.

Competencies required include: ability to formulate and lead an innovative, internationally-leading scientific program of inquiry that incorporates the child and family perspective in the design and implementation of research; superb scientific writing abilities and proficiency with writing journal articles; ability to work collaboratively with clinical teams in an interdisciplinary academic environment; ability to effectively communicate with clinicians and faculty of different backgrounds; versatility with emerging knowledge translation practices; exemplary mentorship skills with potential to train the next generation of investigators; excellent teaching and presentation skills; demonstrated ability to attract external funding; and proven analytical skills and critical thinking.
