Job Title: Strategic Sourcing Buyer

Location: City of Industry, CA (Los Angeles Area)

Reports to: Sourcing Manager Electrical / ITS

Position Overview

As the Strategic Sourcing Buyer, you will be the primary supply chain interface with Proterra’s cross functional teams starting from phase 0 (exploration) to launch of a product culminating with a solid contractual business relationship and defining strategic supply base to support Proterra’s growth. You will participate early in the process with Proterra’s engineering team driving early supplier involvement throughout the development phases, product qualifications, and through the hand-off to the production team. You will work on one or more cross-functional teams interfacing with multiple internal and external disciplines including: Customers, Product Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, Quality Engineers, Supply Chain, After Market Services, outside suppliers, etc. The ideal candidate will be well versed in negotiating with suppliers, be able to review documentation for accuracy for quoting, be able to provide updates to management, well versed in program management to ensure the supplier’s products are designed and built to Proterra’s high standards of functionality and quality.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Business Development teams to support the exploration and assessment on business opportunities for Proterra by defining the sourcing strategy for your product sub category.
  • Work with Engineering on their project milestones related to supply base on design reviews, validation and launch to production culminating in a solid and robust supply base to support Proterra’s operations and overall objectives.
  • Drive results through your sub category.
  • Clear, frequent communication between peers and other work groups ensuring project progress, updates on status, gaps to performance requirements, and action plans to achieve requirements within project timing and constraints.
  • Interact, integrate and drive results across cross-functional teams in engineering, supply chain, quality, production, and executive leadership.
  • Ensure all materials are available when needed
  • Negotiate commercial terms and quote suppliers as required
  • Coordinate a smooth transition handoff to the materials team
  • Work closely with supplier quality and supplier development teams to ensure the potential supply base is adequate for Proterra’s goals
  • Communicate periodic status and achievement plans to peers & executive leadership.
  • Author weekly project status reports and issue resolution tracking reports. Create and execute timing, development and overall status on projects.
  • Work with engineering & quality teams clarify and ensure accuracy of Bills-of-Materials.
  • Provide management control information by collecting, analyzing and summarizing data and trends.
  • Lead the Supplier strategy for your sub category.

Education and Experience

  • Go getter! make stuff happen! Proactive!
  • Bachelor’s Degree in business or engineering (or equivalent experience). MBA or advanced degree plus
  • Minimum 1-3 experience in manufacturing or high-tech industry experience
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Software
  • Strong knowledge of ERP systems (oracle)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Extremely proficient on program management
  • Knowledge of purchasing and principles including the ability to research, analyze and negotiate and close various types of purchase efforts within the guidelines of good business and ethical practices
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, tasks, objectives, and plans; communicate to users/customers accordingly
  • Ability to organize complex work assignments and operate independently within procedural guidelines and management directives
  • Ability to work with different departments and understanding of the role of different departments in the success and function of plant operations
  • Ability to work effectively with internal & external customers
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Your Experience Includes:

  • Minimum 1-3 years’ experience in manufacturing or high-tech industry experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • Expertise with report writing and system configuration management.
  • Knowledge of purchasing and principles of research, analysis and negotiation.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access).
  • Strong knowledge of ERP systems (ORACLE).
