Description

The Lead Youth Advocate provides the children in the Residential Treatment Programs director care, support, and counseling based upon asset building treatment plans developed by the therapist and treatment team. The Lead Youth Advocate assures that a positive, non-coercive, non-punitive and strength-based therapeutic milieu is maintained so that all children are treated with dignity and respect and are able to progress toward being safe and thriving physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

In addition to this, Lead Youth Advocates provide leadership for the execution of daily routines and functions of their assigned unit.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Implements asset building, strength based individual treatment plans as developed by the therapist and treatment team.
  • Insures that all residents are closely monitored and supervised at all times on and off grounds.
  • Participates in planning and implementing the activities of the unit and individual residents.
  • Insures that all specific duties unique to each work shift are completed (e.g., groups, laundry, meal duties, unit cleaning, etc.)
  • Completes all required paperwork with clarity in a timely manner in line with program policies and procedures, including resident logs and incident reports.
  • Dispenses medications as directed by medical personnel and according to agency policies and procedures.
  • Regularly transports clients for medical appointments, recreation outings and activities, and other appointments or activities as scheduled. Attends all required supervision appointments, team meetings, trainings, and other meetings.
  • Maintains positive cooperative relationships will all team members.
  • Makes appropriate decisions that assure children's well-being and safety.
  • Acts as a role model and sets example for team members regarding therapeutic intervention and caring for children.
  • Reinforces program policies and procedures to direct the team decision making process.
  • Directs and coordinates efforts of the team to assure that unit needs are met through appropriate staff assignments.
  • Under the direction of the Supervisor, assists with the shadowing and orientation of new employees. This assistance includes answering questions, encouraging them to get involved, talking about the needs of children, explaining treatment approaches, and describing day to day processes and routines.
  • Provides feedback to Supervisor regarding new employee performance and ongoing training needs.
  • Regularly familiarizes self with information pertaining to the youth, unit dynamics, and activities by reading files, logs, unit calendar, etc.
  • Is expected to assume the support role in the absence of a regular supervisor when needed.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Education: High school graduate or GED required. Bachelor degree in human service field preferred.

Experience:

  • Not a probationary employee
  • Willing to work posted schedule hours.
  • Demonstrated clinical insight as evidenced by: being empathetic to client problems; identifying underlying reasons for client behavior; maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Demonstrated good decision making skills as evidenced by: listening and seeking to understand all sides of situations; making decisions without personalizing; making decisions consistent with program philosophy, policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to be assertive when giving directions or instructions, as evidence by: giving clear instructions or direction without being aggressive; involving other staff in decision making – within program guidelines – and seeking consensuses whenever appropriate; ability to make unpopular decisions when necessitated by program needs or other business necessity.
  • Demonstrated dependability/reliability as evidenced by: consistently following through on job requirements and work related commitments; effectively utilizing work time.

Registration, licenses, certifications or special training: A valid Michigan Driver License, access to reliable transportation and maintain appropriate insurance.

Physical Demands: The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Emotionally able to work with information that may be traumatic in nature, as well as, work with individuals or families in crisis or experiencing trauma.
  • Mobility and capacity to manage a violent and/or self-abusive child when restraint is required to assure safety.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk up to 8 hours per shift.
  • Work involves talking, stooping, squatting, twisting, climbing, kneeling, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to sit and use computer workstation, including keyboard and visual display terminal for extended periods of time.
  • Noise in the work environment is usually moderately quiet but can be very loud at times.
  • Work in an environment with various degrees of discomfort.
  • Driving as needed throughout the day.
