GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Assistant Controller is responsible to provide leadership and assist in the coordination of the daily accounting activities of Church Building & Loan Fund ('CBLF') and the entities for which it provides accounting services.

The Assistant Controller is responsible for 'agency' financial reporting and supervising the maintenance and analysis of the underlying general ledgers. This includes ensuring transactions are properly authorized, recorded in the general ledger and analyzed; interim and final financials statements / footnotes prepared on a timely accurate basis, coordinating each entity's annual audit and recommending improvements to processing, internal controls and reporting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Planning - Prepare the monthly/ audit financial calendars of key financial reporting and compliance dates in coordination with senior finance and operational staff including the UCC National Setting Finance Department
  2. Audits - Interface with external auditors in conjunction with the annual independent corporate audits:
    1. Coordinate schedule requests and submissions, prepare/ review general ledger material/analysis
    2. Assist auditors in facilitating a timely completion of their assignments, assist in preparation of responses to management letter comments
    3. Respond to audit quires and bring any issues to the appropriate levels of management attention.
    4. Assist in preparation of data required by Independent auditors to complete tax returns as required
  3. General Ledger
    1. Supervise the monthly and annual closes of general ledgers: review and maintain the integrity of the general ledger, complete monthly, quarterly and year-end account analyses, assist in the preparation of footnotes for audit reports
    2. Recommend accounting treatment for various types of transactions, review and approve journal entries
    3. Make recommendations to improve accuracy and timeliness of financial information and other operating efficiencies
    4. Work with the Executive Director to develop written policy for loan origination, loan funding, loan retirement and lean lien release, travel policy, procure-to-pay and hire-to-retire transaction cycles.
  4. Financial reporting producing the monthly financial reports and governance presentations for the CB&LF Board of Directors
  5. Transactional processing
    1. Review of all loan documents
    2. Review checks and wire transfers prior to disbursement, to verify, authorized signers and supporting documentation
    3. Payroll support and backup
  6. Cash management
    1. Supervise Cash Receipts activities to ensure integrity of controls and timely and accurate completion of reconciliations
    2. Cash management; recommend bank-to-bank transfer requirements to the Executive Director and the Controller
  7. Other responsibilities
    1. Supervise and develop accounting staff skills and abilities
    2. Develop new accounting software reports to facilitate financial reporting / inquires
    3. Support operations in reviewing systems and procedures
    4. Ad hoc assignments / analyses requested by the Executive Director and other Board Officers
    5. Other assignments and special projects as required

Position Type and expected hours of work:

This is a part-time position: 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM three days per week.

Significant Working relationships:

This positon will interact with and affiliated entities of the United Church of Christ including; the General Minister and President of the UCC, the UCC Chief Financial Officer, UCC Controller, CBLF Executive Director, UCC Director of Human Resources and the UCC General Counsel. UCC affiliated entities including The UCC National Setting, The Pension Boards, and the United Church Funds.

 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting is required. Preference will be given to candidates with an MBA or CPA credentials, and experience in church or not-for-profit financial management. Relevant financial management experience with in-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices and principles, and extensive knowledge and experience with financial computer applications and systems.
  • 7+ years relevant experience including 4 years in mid–level accounting positions with multiple staff supervision.
  • Strong Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (preferably including non-profit accounting), general ledger analysis and financial reporting.
  • Professional abilities to pay attention to detail, analyze financial data, solve financial problems, develop and implement solutions and write procedures. The position is required to initiate projects, prioritizes tasks and complete tasks on a timely basis with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment.
  • Good professional written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills - ability to relate and clearly communicate with operating management, financial staff and other departments.
  • Good skills in Excel, Word and enterprise-wide accounting applications
  • Strong work ethic exhibiting a sense of urgency in completion of tasks, willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and occasional weekend work
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the Church, with a knowledge of, or a willingness to learn about the history and polity of the United Church of Christ and of the history, purpose and programs of Church Building & Loan Fund.
  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to diversity in the workplace as well as an understanding of mission.
  • Some travel within the U.S. is required may be necessary periodically.
  • Trinergy Financial Systems considered a plus
