Senior Engineer (Topside Design) 

Description

The Columbia Group (TCG), a design engineering and technical services company that has a successful 50+-year history of providing the United States Military with engineering, design, acquisition, logistics management, fabrication, test and evaluation, information technology and financial management support services, is seeking a Senior Engineer (Topside Design).

The ideal candidate will perform the following duties:

  • Works directly with stakeholders and project managers in the planning and execution of technical activities on complex projects related to vessel (ship) design and modifications. Employs experience, existing guidelines and instructions, guidance form experienced engineering supervisors and independent judgment to plan and accomplish task objectives. Assignments may require the development of improvements to current designs, techniques and procedures and/or innovative approaches.
  • Applies vessel design knowledge in accordance with applicable U.S. Navy or American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) rules, regulations, and industry standards to develop analyses and products in one or more of the following technical areas:
    • Develop general arrangements and configuration, developing requirements for area and volume, preparing overall ship arrangement concepts and drawings illustrating primary functional allocation of spaces within the ship considering location and adjacency constraints;
    • Develop designs, arrangements, and specifications for vessel systems and compartments;
    • Performing special studies including access and line of sight analyses, assisting in detailed layouts of individual compartments such as living and berthing spaces, ship support spaces, storerooms, and shops.
  • Provide engineering support in the analysis of all technical issues and design challenges pertaining to all ship systems.
  • Communicate and participate in integrated product teams (IPTs) and working groups with Navy entities in support of the program.
  • Participate in Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs) with Navy and Coast Guard customers.
  • Coordinate and participate in the creation of technical papers, studies, and reports on emerging issues.
  • Analyze technical reports from third party design sources and make recommendations to Government customers.
  • Assist in the review/or preparation of acquisition documents such as statements of work (SOWs) and systems specifications for partners and subcontractors.
  • Occasional travel is required, within the Washington, DC metropolitan area for meetings. There is also the potential for travel to naval and private shipyards, and visits with European partners.
