Job Summary: Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh (“CLP”) is looking for an enthusiastic and innovative Early Learning Lead Librarian to lead the Library’s efforts in early literacy and learning initiatives for expecting families and children from birth to 5 years old and their caregivers. Working under the direction of the Coordinator of Children’s Services and Family Engagement, the Early Learning Lead Librarian pioneers research-based literacy programs, encourage active family engagement, and bridge economic and digital divides.

CLP prides itself on innovative programs and projects that seek to provide all children with the best opportunities to prepare for school and life success, with a special focus on eliminating gaps in inequitable outcomes for children and families of color and all children and families facing inequities. By partnering with community members and organizations, CLP has engaged in a vast number of successful initiatives that support cognitive, social and emotional development.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervising the Early Learning BLAST Team and developing the skills and abilities of all staff in the area of child development and early literacy through coaching and learning opportunities;
  • Developing programs and services that actively engage parents, caregivers and families in their Pre-K child’s literacy and learning;
  • Developing library services and programs that seek to eliminate gaps in inequitable outcomes for children and families of color and all children and families facing inequities;
  • Enhancing programs and services to include expanded access to technology and increasing the associated learning skills;
  • Directing and evaluating special Early Learning outreach efforts and activities;
  • Advocating and engaging the community in early literacy to ensure identified needs are addressed through relevant programs and services;
  • Working with CLP Children’s Services Coordinator and External & Government Relations to write, manage, and report grants and special projects;
 
Position Requirements
  • Knowledge and understanding of theories of early childhood learning and implications for library service;
  • Knowledge of early literacy research and best practices for library service to children and caregivers;
  • Knowledge of and commitment to best practices in equity, diversity an inclusion;
  • Knowledge and understanding of effective techniques to instruct adults;
  • Minimum three years of experience creating and implementing programs for children and caregivers;
  • Strong leadership skills along with a solid knowledge and innovative vision of library services for children;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • MLS from an ALA accredited school;
  • PA Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, and FBI Fingerprint Criminal Record Check required upon offer of employment.
 
Full-Time/Part-Time Full-Time  
Work Hours Base schedule is 37.5 hours per week, including days, evenings and weekends with additional hours as needed.  
Salary $50,000 annually
