191062 - Children's Library Assistant 

Location CLP - Main  

Job Summary: Seeking a highly motivated and energetic individual who has superior customer service skills and can perform a variety of tasks to support library services for children and their families at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh – Main, Children’s Department. This candidate will work closely with the Library Services Manager, Children’s Librarians, and additional Library Assistants to execute the vision of Children’s Services through outreach, in-house programming, and creating delightful experiences for Main Library visitors.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing outreach visits to the local organizations that the Library Services Manager and Librarians have identified;
  • Staffing the Children’s Department Floor and interacting with Library guests in a friendly and welcoming manner;
  • Presenting engaging programs in consultation with the Library Services Manager from children ages 0-12;
  • Providing high quality customer service to a diverse public and staff in accordance with CLP’s Philosophy and Standards of Service;
  • Engaging in self-directed, peer to peer and formal continuing education opportunities in order to develop professionally and maintain job skills;
  • Providing basic reference and reader’s advisory assistance to Children’s Department visitors;
  • Communicating and collaborating with Children’s Services staff at CLP-Main and across all CLP locations;
  • Greeting customers and providing orientation to the Library;
  • Supporting, encouraging, and creating a community of leaders.
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree Required, preferably in Elementary Education or related field;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Ability to take direction and work both independently and as a part of a team;
  • Awareness of current Children’s bestsellers and literary trends;
  • Experience working with children, teens, or adults in an urban setting preferred;
  • Knowledge of current technologies and electronic resources; online catalog, Windows and MS Office;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule with evenings and weekends included;
  • The physical ability to bend, stoop, stand for long periods of time, push heavy book trucks, and lift heavy loads (25+ pounds);
  • PA State Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, FBI Fingerprint Criminal Records Check, and Mandated Reporter Training upon offer of employment.
Full-Time/Part-Time Part-Time  
Work Hours 20 - 25 hours per week; at least two weekends per month  
Salary $17.00 per hour
