Pay Rate $18.61/hr.  
Description

SUMMARY
Drives solid waste vehicle (packer, lightning loader, roll off truck and loader) as assigned and collects and dumps residential trash, refuse, yard waste or recyclable materials from containers into truck. Responsible for providing quality solid waste service while on route.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This list represents the types of duties required by the position. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected.

• Drives truck on established routes, through residential streets or alleys or through business or industrial areas.
• Provides daily maintenance to assigned truck, including cleaning and maintaining fluid levels, tire pressures, lights, brakes and fuel levels.
• Completes defective equipment reports when necessary.
• Operates equipment that compresses collected refuse.
• Operates automated or semi-automated hoisting devices that raise refuse bins and dump contents into openings in truck bodies.
• Dismount garbage trucks to collect garbage and remount trucks to ride to the next collection point.
• Communicates with dispatchers concerning delays, unsafe sites, accidents, equipment breakdowns, or other maintenance problems.
• Checks road or weather conditions to determine how routes will be affected.
• Tact and diplomacy expected daily in interacting with residents and co-workers.

 
Position Requirements QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Two years proven work experience in driving large heavy duty trucks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED
• Knowledge of proper and safe use of solid waste vehicles.
• Ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
• The ability to quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to a signal (sound, light, picture) when it appears.
• The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, or push, pull, or carry objects.
• The ability to bend, or stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.
• The ability to see details at a distance.
• The ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
• Valid Indiana Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
• Truck Driving Certification a plus.

EQUIPMENT
Two-way radio, front loader truck; loading equipment; packing blade; garbage containers.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Employee performs a physical activity that requires regularly sitting in a truck and considerable use of arms and legs and moving of the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials. Must load, unload, or stack containers, materials, or products, and move or fit heavy objects. Must be able to lift 75 pounds or more.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employee rides in an enclosed vehicle daily and is exposed to both extreme and adverse weather conditions. Exposure to pollutants, dust, gases, odors, or distracting noises or sounds is common. There is exposure to cuts, bites, or stings.
