About the Region

Canine Companions for Independence was founded in Santa Rosa, California in 1975. The National Headquarters and Northwest Training Center are located on the Jean and Charles Schulz Campus in Santa Rosa, California. The Schulz Campus, named after generous supporters Jean and Charles Schulz, opened in 1996. The Northwest Region serves people in Northern California, Northern Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska.


Schedule Information The Canine Early Care Department operates 24/7. Schedules vary.

This position is responsible for providing quality care of the dogs and puppies housed at the Canine Early Development Center (CEDC), including providing high quality cleaning and maintenance of the CEDC kennels, play areas, and socialization and bathing areas that house breeder dogs and puppies. This position also assists with the oversight and care of female dogs throughout various stages of pregnancy, including delivery of neonates and care of litters of puppies housed at the center.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed:


  • Daily clean and disinfect kennels and socialization areas using approved cleaning tools and methods. Ensure runs and puppy areas are thoroughly disinfected prior to, during and after use. Clean toys and bowls for food and water.
  • Report maintenance problems or repairs to the supervisor.

Dog Feeding

  • Prepare and dispense food in appropriate amounts and time intervals, including feeding of special diets to ensure nutritional needs for breeders and puppies are met.
  • Provide adequate nutrition during peak lactation for all female dogs.
  • Assist with weaning of puppies to solid food.
  • Identify signs that indicate a change of diet may be required.
  • Keep records of feeding requirements and meals dispensed.

Dog Care

  • Maintain puppies by cleaning and bathing appropriately to keep them free of urine and feces.
  • Assist with whelping and delivery of all dogs at the center.
  • Ensure puppies receive appropriate nutrition throughout nursing and weaning.
  • Record weights for all puppies to track growth.
  • Groom, bathe and provide nail trimming for puppies and breeders.
  • Provide environmental enrichment opportunities for breeders and puppies.
  • Exercise and socialize breeders and puppies.
  • Recognize, intervene as appropriate and report dogs or puppies in distress.
  • Administer oral, topic and injectable treatments under the recommendation of the supervisor or veterinarian.
  • Assist in emergency first aid, wound treatment, tests, and exams.
  • Keep records of dogs coming and going to/from the center.
  • Assist with collection of biological specimens (blood, feces, urine) from breeders and puppies as requested by the veterinary clinic or research department.
  • Transport dogs and puppies to Canine Companions’ vet clinic or emergency vet as required or needed, using crates or approved methods.
  • Provide breeder and litter information to vet clinic.
  • Assist vet clinic staff and volunteers with processing litters of puppies at CEDC.
  • Scan and send medical records for each puppy to the appropriate regional puppy program manager post processing.
  • Prepare crates for transporting puppies from CEDC to the regions.


  • Monitor inventory kennel supplies and replenish as needed.
  • Report needed supplies to supervisor.


  • Train and assist CEDC volunteers
  • Complete data entry for all required medical or status changes for puppies and breeders.
  • Communicate and log all veterinary concerns, needs and problems.
  • Provide quality customer service to other CCI staff, volunteers and the public.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Be accountable not only for direct responsibilities outlined in this job description but also to serve fellow staff and other constituents with whom position interacts.
Position Requirements


  • Able to perform several tasks concurrently, time management and good organizational and communication skills.
  • Must be able to safely lift 45 pounds and safely handle, hold and restrain active dogs weighing up to 110 pounds. Employees should seek assistance when lifting dogs or objects weighing more than 45 lbs.
  • Able to remain on one’s feet, standing, walking, bending and/or stooping on cement for extended periods.
  • Able to work different day and weekend shifts – weekend and holiday work may be required.
  • Able to complete necessary paperwork and meet deadlines.
  • Able to use computers including email and data base applications.
  • Take direction and show initiative and cooperate with coworkers.

EXPERIENCE: Must have experience with dog health care in a veterinary office setting. Prior dog handling and training preferred but not required.
