Description

The Museum of Life and Science is one of North Carolina's top family destinations, located less than five miles from downtown Durham. Situated on 84-acres, our interactive science park includes a two-story science center, one of the largest butterfly conservatories on the East Coast and beautifully landscaped outdoor exhibits which are safe havens for rescued black bears, lemurs, and endangered red wolves. Other popular attractions include over 60 species of live animals, Dinosaur Trail, Ellerbe Creek Railway, and Hideaway Woods. Our mission is to create a place of lifelong learning where people, from young child to senior citizen, embrace science as a way of knowing about themselves, their community, and their world.

A successful candidate is a natural leader with a keen interest in working with the public, works quickly, efficiently and enthusiastically in a high-volume environment, and demonstrates flexibility for optimal learning and team support.

Responsibilities

  • Warmly welcome visitors and provide them with information concerning prices, daily programs, exhibits and events to help facilitate a great experience and foster repeat visits
  • Sell admission, membership and train tickets while providing exceptional customer service - will act as Front Desk Lead at least two times per work week
  • Be the expert in your assigned area as an example for the part time team - deliver consistently excellent guest experiences and be fully knowledgeable on museum programs and policies
  • Anticipate guests' needs and provide guest feedback to appropriate Museum department
  • Foster a positive staff culture and work environment
  • Be cross trained in all Guest Relations roles including admissions, ranger, parking and group check-in and be remain flexible to fill in any role on a given day
  • Assist in training current and future team members under the guidance of the Guest Relations Manager or Assistant Manager
  • Assist MOD with opening and closing procedures, including facility preparation, cash counting and drawer preparation, clearing the campus for close, and preparing for the next day of operation as requested
  • Perform regular campus checks to ensure a clean, welcoming, friendly environment for guests
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather
  • Transport guests and staff in golf cart and museum road vehicles as needed
  • Other indoor and outdoor duties as assigned
 
Position Requirements
  • At least two years of direct customer service experience, supervisory or leadership experience is a plus
  • Keen observation skills and desire to be proactive about visitor needs and guest environment
  • Attention to detail for accurate processing of admission, membership and ticket sales while maintaining a high standard of service
  • Strong interest in engaging children and adults of all ages through curiosity, discovery, inquiry-based and social learning in the exhibits
  • Enthusiastic and engaging attitude
  • Cash handling/cash register experience
  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies with provided training
  • Able to work a flexible schedule including at least one weekend day per week plus occasional evenings
  • Able to embrace Museum mission
  • Physically able to be on one’s feet for up to 8 hours and travel distances of up to 1.5 miles on various terrain
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Able to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Conversational Spanish a plus
