Purpose of Division:

The Public Relations division manages the corporation’s internal and external communications, including but not limited to regular online and print content, email newsletters, videos, corporate reports (such as the annual report) and social media messaging. The division also provides graphic design support to other business units throughout the corporation, provides overall content management, brand management and enforcement, and website development. This involves establishing and implementing corporate-wide policies, strategies and guidelines, and coordinating audience and strategies that guide the corporation’s communications activities. The Public Relations team also provides communications resources (speechwriting, talking points, media training) for corporate officers and thought leaders. In addition, the division coordinates the delivery of branding and communications best practices to NeighborWorks network organizations.

Position Summary:

The Content Director brings NeighborWorks America work to life through dynamic and compelling storytelling and strong copywriting that moves and engages our network organizations, partners, funders and the wider community more deeply with our mission. The Content Director understands the science behind good storytelling; uses a data-driven approach and is responsible for the storytelling spectrum – from assignment to management of the gathering process ensuring that the content in any form meets our strategic purposes across all channels (audio, visual and written). The Content Director is familiar with traditional and digital media best practices and has a strong journalistic lens. The successful candidate will be a strategic and creative writer who can deliver emotionally engaging content tailored for different target audiences. The ideal candidate can also gather content from others/SME’s and can convey the crux of the idea/content to the writers and content developers on their team. She/he/they is an award-wining editor and writer who appreciates both long- and short-form pieces but is also nimble enough to manage corporate collateral content with ease. She/he/they is an experienced interviewer, researcher and editor, who can distill complex content into easy to read and understand material for a variety of audiences.

The Content Director supports traditional and digital engagement goals across fundraising, programs, marketing and communications. This position reports to the Sr. Vice President, Public Relations and works closely with all departments from within the organization as well as contributors from outside the organization to deliver results driven content.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Draft and prepare strategy briefs
  • Represent the division in strategy and planning meetings
  • Translates a strategy brief into powerful copy and stories that drive a desired action
  • Works to deepen understanding and engagement of our target audiences
  • Manages content development process and packages for multiple channels
  • Supervises content development and digital media staff (to include freelancers, designers and field staff)
  • Develops and establishes relationships with various divisions and field organizations quickly and easily
  • Coordinates with field public affairs staff to identify interviewees and subject matter experts
  • Works to identify and develop compelling stories about our Community Impact programs, staff, and the issues relating to our work in the communities that we serve
  • Identifies opportunities to gather content from the field in support of our editorial content strategy
  • Manage vendor relations -writer, editor, photographer or videographer, etc.
  • Supports Digital Manager to optimize and produce stories and content to website for the purposes of boosting engagement
  • Assist with the Set up, and eventually organizes and manages, digital asset management system to ensure ease of use, optimization for search, all content is properly tagged and archived
  • In collaboration with SVP PR, assist in the preparation and proofing of various materials (talking points, press releases, op-eds, presentations, speeches, newsletters, etc.)
  • Manage editorial calendar
  • Co-produce key institutional documents and serve as assistant executive editor (i.e. books, annual reports, videos)

Qualifications:

  • Diversified portfolio of writing samples covering housing/community development, and/or a related field required
  • Demonstrated experience managing digital and print content
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with graphic design principles
  • Track record of using purposeful storytelling to drive organizational impact and business results
  • Superior written and verbal communications skills a must
  • Exceptional editing skills
  • Experience translating technical source material into accessible compelling human stories for a general audience
  • Must be able to support your position on the em-dash and the oxford comma
  • Understands storytelling and marketing copywriting trends across varied media types
  • Project management skills and attention to detail
  • Previous supervisory experience a must
 
Position Requirements

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • BA/S or equivalent in related field required – English, journalism, PR or communications
  • 10-15 years of professional writing and editorial, content strategy and/or brand management experience, preferably for nonprofit
  • Sr. Editor and journalism experience a plus
  • Experience with video production and interviewing skills
  • Experience with blog management and familiarity with web publishing technologies (WordPress, Drupal, Kentico)
  • Self-motivated and a resourceful learner
  • Ability to work in a collaborative setting on simultaneous projects
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet or exceed deadlines
  • Have strong communication skills and collaborative work ethic
