About the Organization The mission of Fenway Health is to enhance the wellbeing of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQIA+) community and all people in our neighborhoods and beyond through access to the highest quality health care, education, research, and advocacy. Fenway Health was founded in 1971 and has grown from a less than 10 person operation in the basement of a building near the Boston Fens to one of the largest LGBT-focused organizations in the world. It consists of three main centers:

• Fenway Community Health Center, our clinical arm, which is a federally qualified health center that operates three clinic sites (Fenway:1340, Fenway:South End, and the Sidney Borum, Jr. Health Center) in the Boston area and provides over 30,000 patients with primary and specialty medical care, behavioral health care, optometry care, and dental care;

• The Fenway Institute, our research/training/education/policy development arm, which houses numerous research initiatives as well as the National LGBT Education Project, the LGBT Aging Project, the National Center for Innovation in HIV Care, and the Center for Population Research in LGBT Health; and

• AIDS Action, our HIV/AIDS service organization, which provides nonclinical services (case management, housing and legal assistance, outreach, peer support) to people living with HIV/AIDS and operates numerous programs focusing on HIV/STD prevention/testing/treatment, including the Access (drug user health program), TransCEND (transgender peer support and risk reduction program), and Youth on Fire (drop-in center for homeless and street-involved youth) programs.

Position Study Coordinator, Epidemiology Team  
Full-Time/Part-Time Full-Time  

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator(s) and Project Director, the Study Coordinator coordinates the ongoing implementation of two longitudinal cohort studies of transgender women.

Representative Duties:

  1. Coordinates research study implementation
  • Coordinates and oversees day-to-day operations of study protocol including recruitment and retention, study visits, data storage and monitoring, and other study activities as needed
  • Assists with the development and management of data collection and management tools, providing support and training to study staff as needed
  • Oversees the management of study specific documents according to guidelines of the reviewing Institutional Review Board (IRB), NIH and/or study sponsor
  • Liaises with other study sites and collaborators to provide support and ensure successful completion of study tasks and goals
  • Tracks study activities and develops agenda for weekly team meeting and facilitates regular study team meetings
  • Actively participates in all study-related conference calls and attends operations meetings
  • Manages study budgets; liaises with external consultants to ensure timely payment; submits and tracks POs for study expenses; maintains folder with variance reports and budget information; write and maintains consultant agreements, and maintains documentation on external consultants
  • Assists in the training of study staff and implementation of study visits including the administration of informed consents and assessments and the collection/management of participant data as needed
  1. Assists with the recruitment, screening, interviewing, and retention of study volunteers
  • Works with study staff to identify creative and effective measures for reaching potential study participants
  • Oversees and partakes in recruitment efforts to reach recruitment goals
  • Assesses and documents eligibility and participation status of candidates and arranges baseline and follow-up appointments with potential and enrolled participants
  • Conducts behavioral interviews/assessments with study participants in a clear, open-minded, non-judgmental context
  • Obtains certification in HIV counseling and testing and conducts pre and post-test HIV counseling and rapid testing as part of study visit
  • Develops and implements strategies to ensure and enhance participant retention
  • Completes the day-to-day tasks of study-related retention including calling participants and interfacing with Fenway staff
  1. Assists with the development of regulatory procedures and study materials
  • Assists with the development of Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions, and provides annual reports according to the reviewing IRB policies and procedures
  • Drafts and edits study materials including protocol, protocol summary, recruitment and screening materials, study and site specific protocols, etc.
  • Maintains study participant accountability records according to protocol and communicates necessary changes or activities to study staff and investigators
  • Performs quality control and assurance checks of study documents and assures that corrections are made per site operating procedures
  • Maintains regulatory documents per IRB, sponsor, and agency guidelines
  1. Manages relationship with the investigative team
  • Maintains regular communication with the Principal Investigator(s), co-investigators, and collaborators
  • Develops and disseminates recruitment, enrollment, retention, and study progress reports
  • Develops and disseminates timely reports of critical study information to study investigator(s) and others
  • Assists with logistics of study team meetings and conference calls
  1. Assists with the analysis of study data and publication of study findings
  • Assists investigators with the publication of research findings: entering, cleaning and analyzing data; drafting and editing manuscripts, abstracts and conference posters and presentations; presents at local and national conferences and meetings on study findings
  • Assists with grant writing and study progress reports as needed
  • Maintains current knowledge of HIV and transgender health research by reading public health, medical journals, articles and other HIV-related publications, attending conferences, seminars, forums, trainings and other presentations pertinent to the field

  • Maintains professional competencies necessary to perform job responsibilities, maintains and provides agency with records of continuing education activities
  • Serves on agency committees and in professional organizations as an agency representative when appropriate

  • Master’s degree in epidemiology, psychology, or public health (or equivalent degree in a related field) OR Bachelor’s degree with at least 2 years of comparable research experience

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Prior experience working on federally funded research studies
  • Prior training in quantitative and/or qualitative methods and data analysis
  • Excellent interpersonal communication (written and verbal) and presentation skills
  • Superior computer skills (Microsoft Word, Power-Point, Excel, Email) with the competence to learn new software applications and technologies for research
  • Ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups of individuals for recruitment into research studies, including sexual and gender minority populations who are at risk for HIV

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Demonstrated research background in HIV research and/or work experience with transgender women, men who have sex with men, or other groups at high-risk for acquiring or transmitting HIV highly preferred
  • Previous experience developing and carrying out recruitment efforts with hard to reach populations
  • Knowledge of transgender communities in the Boston-area
  • Experience working in an ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse environment
