The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) is a not-for-profit, independent certification organization whose primary purposes are to establish and monitor a national certification system, and to identify those counselors who have voluntarily sought and obtained board certification. The organizational mission is to advance counseling as the premier certification body of the profession with a vision of enhancing society worldwide through quality counseling. NBCC and Affiliates is comprised of three organizational affiliates: the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE), and the NBCC Foundation (NBCC-F).

NBCC and Affiliates has operations and partnerships in 40 countries providing certification, training programs, and public health services through institutes and residencies. Over 66,000 Board Certified Counselors serve the public and advance mental health efforts across the globe. With a portfolio of nine credentials related to professional counseling, mental health, addictions, human services and career development, NBCC and Affiliates seeks to expand the professional capacity of counselors and human service professionals. NBCC is focused specifically on credentialing, certification and quality assurance, while CCE focuses on providing education and training opportunities and leveraging credentials to best serve communities. Additionally, CCE provides organizational management services for associations, boards and other management clients. The NBCC Foundation engages in capacity building, seeking to expand access to mental health services in underserved and never-served communities and increase the accessibility of high quality professional development resources for counselors.


The Professional Resources Department expands the capacity for available counselor resources by offering innovative, professional content for counseling professionals. This department publishes The Professional Counselor (TPC) which provides peer-reviewed, open-access research and conceptual data for use in supporting counseling students' research and enhancing counselor educators' and practitioners' skills. TPC publishes innovative and scholarly articles that are free and open to all, thus providing new and reliable resources to our readers. The Professional Resources Department may also be responsible for other publications that contribute to counselors being well- informed on a wide range of counseling topics.

Position Requirements


The Director of Professional Resources will provide strategic leadership and day-to-day administration of the Professional Resources Department. The director is responsible for planning and directing the initiatives to ensure successful implementation, delivery, and management of professional publications. The Director of Professional Resources plays a key role in working with the editors to provide tactical management of products and resources.

  • Leads in the ongoing development, implementation and evaluation of the Professional Resource Department’s Strategic Plan.
  • Supervises and collaborates with editors on a range of topics including journal submissions, ethics, quality, presentation and marketing of journal content, and strategies for improving impact
  • Develops and launches new journals and ancillary products as directed by strategic plans
  • Provides direction to the marketing team for optimal journal promotion
  • Ensures adherence to editorial policy driven by research and appropriate to the publications program
  • Ensures that program services are appropriately staffed within the confines of agency resources.
  • Hires, supervises, directs and evaluates staff in performance of their duties
  • Drafts reports as needed on the progress of the department and its publications
  • Provides data for reports on milestones, deadlines, and progress; assists with synthesizing and comparing data as needed
  • Ensures that fiscal management responsibilities are met, and appropriate reporting is completed to the Interim Vice President of Foundation and Professional Services.
  • Participates in the preparation of organizational budgets to be presented by the NBCC Executive Leadership Team for approval by the NBCC and Affiliates Board of Directors.
  • Ensures procedures are implemented and maintained which enable sound fiscal management, accurate reporting, & reduce risk to the safety and stability of the organizational funds, physical assets and other property.
  • Implements all orders and resolutions of the NBCC and Affiliates Board of Directors
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field
  • At least three years of publishing experience
  • At least two years of experience with content written for counselors or mental health professionals
  • Experience working with web-based technology and management information systems
  • Excellent communication and comprehension skills, both written and verbal, including professional and tactful demeanor in dealing with authors and editors
  • Experience in copyediting and proofreading (thorough knowledge of English grammar and technical, scientific, and clinical writing styles)
  • Superb organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, determine priorities, and meet deadlines
  • Both team-oriented and independent work abilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft suite including Word and Excel
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
