About the Organization The mission of Fenway Health is to enhance the wellbeing of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQIA+) community and all people in our neighborhoods and beyond through access to the highest quality health care, education, research, and advocacy. Fenway Health was founded in 1971 and has grown from a less than 10 person operation in the basement of a building near the Boston Fens to one of the largest LGBT-focused organizations in the world. It consists of three main centers:

• Fenway Community Health Center, our clinical arm, which is a federally qualified health center that operates three clinic sites (Fenway:1340, Fenway:South End, and the Sidney Borum, Jr. Health Center) in the Boston area and provides over 30,000 patients with primary and specialty medical care, behavioral health care, optometry care, and dental care;

• The Fenway Institute, our research/training/education/policy development arm, which houses numerous research initiatives as well as the National LGBT Education Project, the LGBT Aging Project, the National Center for Innovation in HIV Care, and the Center for Population Research in LGBT Health; and

• AIDS Action, our HIV/AIDS service organization, which provides nonclinical services (case management, housing and legal assistance, outreach, peer support) to people living with HIV/AIDS and operates numerous programs focusing on HIV/STD prevention/testing/treatment, including the Access (drug user health program), TransCEND (transgender peer support and risk reduction program), and Youth on Fire (drop-in center for homeless and street-involved youth) programs.

Position Medical Assistant Floor Lead  
Full-Time/Part-Time Full-Time  

Under the supervision of the Charge Nurse and as a member of the medical team, the Medical Assistant Floor Lead will coordinate and provide the daily medical support for patients and medical providers as well as general support for other clinic activities. As the MA Team Lead, you will serve as a functional supervisor for the Medical Assistant Team on your assigned floor and assist with schedule management to ensure task and workflow readiness.

Primary Representative Duties:

  • Oversee Clinic Workflow
  • Supervision of Medical Assistant Team
Other Representative Duties:
  • Providing direct patient care, using clinical and office procedures as appropriate for a Medical Assistant in an outpatient clinic.
  • Effectively maintains medical supply stock, medication supply stock, equipment in working order and cleanliness of clinic.
  • Provide phone and clerical support for general patient inquiries and outreach.
  • Provides support for walk-in patients.
  • Effectively communicates with patients, co-workers on medical team, in medical department and across departments.
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of Fenway Health services, policies and procedures.
  • Provides age-specific care per Fenway Health policy.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Position Requirements


  • Successful completion of Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant Program or comparable experience
  • Minimum of a High School Diploma
  • Certified Medical Assistant (strongly preferred) or obtains certification within 1 year of assuming role
  • Willingness to work any shift FH is open as needed, including evenings, for coverage purposes
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Effective skills in the areas of service, teamwork, communication, respect for others, and time/priority management
  • Demonstrates a appropriate appearance and demeanor, consistent with a professional work environment
  • Understanding of basic medical terminology
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Bilingual or multilingual a plus
  • Experience working with an ethnically, culturally and racially diverse work staff preferred
  • Ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups of individuals
  • Ability to deal effectively with stress relating to the changing organizational, personnel, and healthcare environment

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Physical work environment generally is that typical for an office in terms of lighting, temperature, and structure.
  • Work may involve exposure to loud noise, strong odors, and emotionally liable individuals
  • Typically moderate physical activity requiring handling average-weight objects up to 15-20 pounds, Assisting with mobility impaired patients, and standing and/or walking for most the day. Lifting of weights greater than 20 pounds does occur and will require the Medical Assistant to ask for additional help.
  • May work with body fluids and tissues, and could be exposed to pathogens and will require safety training
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require safety precautions and may require the use of protective equipment
  • Location of work and specific duties may change in response to clinic needs

  • Medical Assistant staff on assigned floor in collaboration with supervisor team
