JOB DESCRIPTION

OVERVIEW: Early Head Start/Head Start Kitchen Assistant provides an integral component of the program by providing nutritious and attractive meals to children. Adherence to the Head Start Performance Standards and the USDA/CACFP Food Program requirements is the key to providing quality services. The Kitchen Assistant is responsible for aiding the Head Cook in planning menus, promoting healthy eating habits, supporting nutrition education in the classrooms, and implementation of nutritional meals for the Child Care and Early Head Start programs.

WORK LOCATION: Lower Elwha Early Head Start/Head Start

SUPERVISED BY: Health Manager and Cook

POSITION STATUS: Part Time: 20 hours per week

SALARY LEVEL: $16.00per hour

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday

42 weeks per year

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:

  • Assist the Cook by ensuring that dishes, appliances, and utensils are cleaned/sanitized, stored properly, and available for use when needed.
  • Collaborate with HS/EHS Cook in the purchasing and proper receiving of foods/supplies to assure quality and cost control. Help Cook bring in food purchased for the week.
  • Assist Cook to prepare CACFP qualified meals including all required components. Meals will include breakfast, lunch, and pm snack.
  • Be available to cover for Cook during absences.
  • Prioritize work schedule so that food production flows smoothly, dishes and cooking equipment is cleaned/sanitized, and meals are served on schedule.
  • Monitor food temperatures for safety and record temperatures of hot foods. Limit time that cold foods are held at room temperature prior to serving.
  • Check temperatures of refrigerators and freezers daily and keep records.
  • Maintain standards of sanitation in the kitchen by daily cleaning and disinfecting.
  • Maintain proper storage and control of waste
  • Participate in professional development trainings pertinent to position and professional development goals. Meet training requirements of Head Start Performance Standards and USDA/CACFP
  • Keep classroom carts clean, sanitized, and stocked with proper paper supplies, utensils, and age appropriate dining ware, including sippy cups or bottles as needed.
  • Maintain clean laundry; daily washing, sanitizing folding, and properly putting away all laundry (sheets, wash cloths, bibs, etc).
  • Other duties as assigned.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must be able to prepare quality meals for large groups, follow recipes, and meet nutritional needs for family style and pre-portion style serving.
  • Must be able to keep accurate records on menu, budget and inventory.
  • Must be free to travel, available and willing to participate in staff training, meetings and workshops.
  • Personal cleanliness/neatness, good hygiene and grooming.
  • Must be able to work independently, make decisions, and maintain program wide goals and priorities.
  • Demonstrated cooking skills, including baking.
  • Maintain personal cleanliness/neatness and health.
  • Physical capability to perform job functions.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationship with others, and to relate well with children, staff and parents as well as visitors to the center.
  • Must maintain strict CONFIDENTIALITY
  • Must UA Testing prior to employment
  • Valid Washington State Drivers license, must be insurable
  • First Aid/Infant & Child CPR certification required within 30 days of hire.
  • Food Handlers Permit.
  • A physical exam with results in letter form that states person is free of communicable diseases (Negative TB test) by employment date
  • NO prior convictions of child-related offenses or any felonies. Background check to be conducted prior to employment date
  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Head Start Drug Free Workplace policies.
  • Experience with low income and culturally diverse families.
  • Have knowledge of USDA meal patterns/portions.
  • Attend annual USDA training.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. This position requires interaction with children, staff, parents and community members.
  • Must have HIV/AIDS Blood Borne Pathogen Training.
  • MUST have or be able to obtain Tribal or State food handlers card within 2 weeks of obtaining the positon.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY POSITION:

  • Knowledge of early childhood education or development
  • Ability to be sensitive and mature individual who is able to relate well to both children and adults.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and written is necessary
  • Ability to provide leadership and stability for program continually.
  • Working knowledge of local community resources.
  • Ability to prepare quality meals for large groups and meet nutritional needs
  • Ability to keep accurate records on menu, budget and inventory.
  • Ability to respond appropriately (both mentally and physically) to an emergency or a crisis situation.
  • Working knowledge of local community resources.
  • Ability to translate theory and professional training into practical solutions.
  • Ability to comply with strict CONFIDENTIALITY.
  • Ability to comply with TRIBAL policies and procedures.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Moderate lifting, 15-40 pounds, moderate carrying over 10 pounds and light carrying under 10 pounds, and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Reaching above shoulders; use of hands and fingers;
  • Daily kneeling, stooping, bending and stretching to perform job duties in the kitchen.
  • Able to sustain prolonged standing and sitting.
  • Able to focus and be alert to task

  • Reports to work at scheduled times and maintains good attendance..
  • Performs all duties assigned in a timely and professional manner.
