WORK OBJECTIVE This work is learning the fundamentals of wastewater treatment plant operations. After instruction and orientation, the employee will be expected to carry out routine duties as performed by a wastewater plant operator. The purpose of this position is to help prepare the employee for certification as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator “C“. Work is performed under supervision of the Wastewater Division Supervisor or certified water treatment plant operator. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The list of essential functions is intended to be representative of the work performed. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed if such duties are a logical assignment to the position. - Works under the direction of a certified treatment plant operator, the trainee services pumps, motors, controls and related equipment.
- Reads a variety of charts and meters, keeping daily log sheets and preparing reports.
- Climbs ladders and water tanks to ensure cleanliness and perform maintenance on tanks.
- Performs general maintenance of pumps and other related equipment.
- Performs landscaping duties to include riding mowers, weed eating etc.
- Proficient in monitoring flow rates, chlorine residual, sampling technique and other related plant duties.
- Must learn trouble-shooting methods of all plant equipment so as to maintain the highest degree of treatment.
- Required to attend training courses when available during off-duty hours.
- Required to work varying shifts, hours and locations in order to become trained in all aspects of plant operations.
- Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or GED equivalent; emphasis on basic mathematics and chemistry. Exceptions to the minimum qualifications must be reviewed by the Human Resources Manager and approved by the City Manager prior to job offer. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Possession of a valid Florida Drivers License. Must obtain a Class “C” Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification within one (1) year of date of employment as trainee. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES - Knowledge of basic tools used in maintenance and basic industrial applications.
- Knowledge of safety rules and regulations related to Wastewater Utilities operations.
- Ability to operate basic equipment and machinery, e.g., pumps, generators, compressors, maintenance equipment.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
- Demonstrate ability to understand and follow verbal and basic written instructions and maintain effective work relationships with other employees.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, climbing, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). Requires intermittent lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavier objects (100+ pounds). ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS Tasks are performed in outdoor environments. Due to the nature and location of the work environment, tasks include potential for prolonged exposure to disagreeable elements, e.g., heat, humidity, inclement weather. Some tasks include working in and around moving vehicles and associated vehicle/equipment areas, where heightened awareness to surroundings and adherence to established safety precautions is essential in avoidance of injury or accidents.
