Manager of Public Programs, Academy Museum 

Description

Reporting to the Director of Education and Engagement, the Manager of Public Programs will develop and implement all aspects of the public programs including but not limited to: lectures, conversations, in-gallery talks, symposia and large-scale events. The position is seeking an energetic, responsible and experienced person to manage a full-time coordinator and contractors to execute multiple programs per week to fulfill the goal of serving a multitude of visitors each year. Strong knowledge and experience working in film history, event production, and project management is needed along with exceptional written and oral communication skills.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensure all public programs are developed to meet needs of people with varied abilities, skills, and interests.
  • Conceptualize, develop, and execute exhibition and collection-related public programs, including lectures, panels, concerts, performances, community events, studio activities, large-scale evening events, in-gallery tours, and new initiatives.
  • Assist in the development and planning of a dynamic roster of programs.
  • Research film history, art historical and museum education topics to be used for the development of public programs.
  • Develop and implement multi-session courses for adult and intergenerational audiences that offer in-depth views into exhibitions and the permanent collection.
  • Contact presenters, performers, other stake holders about programs; produces correspondence, contracts, and travel itineraries; maintains program files; and produces check requests.
  • Coordinate public program staffing needs, including recruiting, scheduling, and overseeing volunteers and paid staff.
  • Establish and maintain filing systems, records, and statistics for public programs.
  • Continuously analyze and maintain records to improve public program offerings.
  • Prepare and manage budgets; monitors expenses accordingly.
  • Develops promotional materials.
  • Helps to produce programs in collaboration with academic institutions and other arts organizations.
 
Position Requirements
  • BA degree in, education, film studies, art history, museum studies or related field required.
  • 3-5 years experience creating and implementing successful public programming.
  • Relevant managerial experience is required overseeing paid staff and volunteers.
  • Knowledge of a broad range of periods and styles of film in addition to strong understanding of museum education and teaching methods.
  • Superior public speaking, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience cultivating high-profile speakers.
  • Creative thinker with outstanding customer service skills.
  • Flexibility in schedule to accommodate evening and weekend programs.
