The Controller for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures (the “Academy Museum”) is an extraordinary opportunity for a creative financial thinker to build and manage the accounting infrastructure in support of the day-to-day operations of the Academy Museum, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation. This position is responsible for leading the accounting functions at the Academy Museum to ensure the best practices are maintained in order to optimize the Museum’s financial success. You will be a key part of senior leadership at the Museum, reporting directly to its Chief Operating Officer and working closely with the Chief Financial Officer of the Academy Foundation, the nonprofit corporation related to Museum for which the Museum also serves as a supporting organization. Your primary responsibilities include the day-to-day general accounting, oversight of cash handling and management, internal controls, financial analysis, internal financial reporting, and budgets, with a focus on mitigating risk and ensuring that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and leads the overall Academy Museum budget (including expenditures and income), working in consultation with the COO and other museum staff as well as Finance staff at the Academy Foundation.
  • Ensures that work done in the department is accurate, timely and in accordance with generally accepted accounting practices; makes sure that appropriate internal controls are in place.
  • Develops annual institutional budget; monitors institutional expenses in relation to budgets; performs ongoing budget analysis.
  • Works with the Operations team on developing procedures for appropriate accounting and cash handling for revenue for retail, ticketing, events, membership and programming.
  • Develops, oversees and maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for accounts payable and ensuring that accounts are paid on time.
  • Responsible for accounts receivable and ensuring collection of all payments in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that cash reconciliations are completed.
  • Maintains the chart of accounts.
  • Issues timely and complete financial documents.
  • Recommends benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations.
  • Calculates and issue financial and operating metrics.
  • Calculates variances from the budget and report significant issues to management.
  • Oversees the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit.
  • Complies with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and works with the CFO on tax filings.
 
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. CPA and/or MBA preferred.
  • 5-7 years of experience at a major non-profit that has multiple sources of revenue (philanthropic and earned) and diverse programs and cost centers.
  • 3+ years of experience at a museum or similar public facing environment looking after large volumes of cash transaction.
  • Ability to provide accurate and timely financial reporting in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Ability to be diplomatic when interacting with staff, volunteers, visitors, and outside organizations.
