Summary
The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum Art Institute Department is seeking an experienced Gallery Curator for a 6-12 month assignment who will work closely with the department administrator on fine art exhibitions and collection management. To be successful, the Art Institute Gallery Curator needs a combination of artistic awareness, business acumen, interpersonal skills and practical abilities. As the Gallery Curator, you will be responsible for the commercial and artistic success of the gallery. You will be responsible for the sales and marketing areas of running an art gallery and will communicate directly with artists and dealers under the direction of the Art Institute Administrator. You will be involved in developing an artistic vision for and hanging gallery shows, selecting art and artists to enhance the gallery's reputation and to bring in money from the sales of their artwork. You will work under the Art Institute Administrator's direction, but will still have responsibility for the commercial and artistic success of the gallery.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensure the smooth running of the gallery.
  • Maintain ongoing promotion and advertising of the gallery.
  • Assess and select artwork in accordance with the Museum's line of business.
  • Plan, organize, present and market exhibitions and shows, including responsibility for gallery receptions, and public relations.
  • Work closely with and guide the work of the Art Institute Exhibitions and Collections Assistant.
  • Work closely with individual artists, develop relationships with new artists, and extend relationships with established artists from the region.
  • Develop and maintain a full Art Institute events calendar.
  • Promote exhibitions and work by individual artists.
  • Curate shows in cooperation with artists and technicians.
  • Arrange transportation of work to and from the gallery, both nationally and internationally.
  • Organize equipment hire and ensure correct installation of the artwork.
  • Negotiate with exhibition and gallery managers and curators from other galleries to arrange for loans.
  • Develop client lists by notifying potential clients of particular works and exhibitions, according to their interests.
  • Extend the client database.
  • Liaise with visiting artists, negotiate sales catalogue acquisitions and keep records and archives.
  • Develop and update the gallery website.
  • Promote and sell artists' work, through exhibitions, personal contacts, and electronic means.
  • Be able to manage and track all incoming/outgoing inventory.
  • Keep up to date with industry developments and market trends.
  • General administration, budgeting, finance and accounts.
  • Coordinate the Artist in Residence program in collaboration with the Art Director.

Supervisory Responsibilities
This position supervises the Art Institute Exhibitions and Collections Assistant and may oversee Art Institute volunteers and/or interns.

Position Requirements

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree in fine arts, business, arts administration, or related field from a four-year College or University and three to five years of related gallery experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Art installation and handling experience a must.
  • Previous art gallery experience, interest/knowledge of art history, experience facilitating visual art gallery events and working with electronic data/collections databases preferred.
  • Previous museum experience desirable.
  • Exceptional sales ability, communication skills, and customer service.
  • Excellent multi-tasker and able to handle multiple projects.
  • Show great attention to detail and complete execution of tasks.
  • Ability to work with a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays and evenings.
  • Passionate about meeting deadlines, highly organized and precise with ability to manage time to balance physical work and a clerical workload.
  • Proven success working with teams from various departments.

Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software; Design software; Inventory software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision.
