Job Summary: At Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, we believe in the richness of diversity and we build community, enable learning, provide access and value people. Teen Library Assistants create a continuum of service to inspire and facilitate lifelong learning by supporting the developmental needs of youth ages 11-18. Our Library Assistants act as mentors and connect all youth to resources and opportunities that reflect their interests, respond to their needs and empower them to be builders of their own future. This position also supports Children’s Services, since the Teen Library Assistant will be part of the Children’s and Teen Services team at CLP – Squirrel Hill.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Working to develop rapport with library customers and help to fulfill their informational and recreational needs by providing quality reference, readers’, listeners’, and viewers’ advisory using print and electronic resources;
  • Providing high quality customer service to a diverse public and staff in accordance with CLP’s Philosophy and Standards of Service;
  • Implementing and promoting programs in the Library, at outreach locations, at local schools and other non-traditional settings to meet community needs;
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with individuals and agencies serving youth in the Squirrel Hill area;
  • Implementing and facilitating the priorities identified in conjunction with the Children’s and Teen Services Coordinators and CLP – Squirrel Hill Library Services Managers;
  • Communicating with, collaborating with and supporting Children’s Services and Teen Services-related staff at CLP – Squirrel Hill and across CLP locations;
  • Modeling best practices and empowering all location staff to connect with and serve youth to ensure a continuum of service;
  • Providing meaningful experiences for volunteers, especially teen volunteers.
 
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree Required;
  • Experience working with children, teens, or adults in an urban setting preferred;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Ability to take direction and work both independently and as a part of a team;
  • Knowledge of current technologies and electronic resources; online catalog, Windows and MS Office;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule with evenings and weekends included;
  • The physical ability to bend, stoop, stand for long periods of time, push heavy book trucks, and lift heavy loads (25+ pounds);
  • PA State Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, FBI Fingerprint Criminal Records Check, and Mandated Reporter Training upon offer of employment.

 
Full-Time/Part-Time Part-Time  
Work Hours 20 hours per week; evenings and Saturdays required.  
Salary $17.00 per hour
