Annual Giving will play a significant role in Woodland Park Zoo’s forthcoming comprehensive campaign, as supporters at every level will be foundational to our success. This dynamic position has great potential to shape the campaign structure and ultimate success in deep and exciting ways, and help Woodland Park Zoo transform to meet some of the greatest challenges of the 21st Century and advance a broad social movement for wildlife conservation.

Under the general direction of the Director of Donor Relations, the Annual Giving and Stewardship Manager is a key contributor to the success of Woodland Park Zoo’s holistic fundraising efforts. This position leads a robust and innovative annual giving program charged with growing a strong base of unrestricted annual gifts, building and stewarding the pipeline for new major gift donors and developing innovative digital fundraising and donor communication strategies. This position manages the Annual Giving Coordinator and the Donor Stewardship Coordinator to develop, plan, execute and evaluate comprehensive annual giving, donor stewardship and donor recognition designed to broaden the zoo’s donor base, communicate giving impact effectively and increase overall participation, donor retention and financial support for Woodland Park Zoo. The Annual Giving and Stewardship Manager will build philanthropic support of our mission, expand our donor base and position the organization for future growth, success and long-term sustainability of WPZ’s strategic plan and manage a portfolio of mid-level donors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and implement a robust annual giving and donor stewardship program, complemented by a targeted mid-level donor program, with goals, strategies, timelines and benchmarks to acquire, renew, upgrade, and retain donors and prospects.
    • Collaborate across the Advancement team to utilize all tools available, including social media, digital reach and on site engagement activities.
    • Embrace and champion a culture of philanthropy.
  • Oversee a robust, proactive and segmented, multi-approach annual fundraising program that aligns with the zoo’s overall communications, digital media strategies and interactive engagement opportunities.
    • Work with the Annual Giving Coordinator to analyze data regarding annual giving programs and past giving trends to provide analyses of program results and to plan for future segmentation and engagements.
  • Provide strategic leadership and oversee execution of an effective and creative donor stewardship, recognition and communications program for donors at all levels that increases retention, conveys impact and advances the zoo’s fundraising priorities.
    • Continuously assess the efficacy, visibility and relevancy of giving societies and recommend adaptations as appropriate.
    • Develop and drive stewardship plans for major fundraising events.
  • Manage the individual donor pipeline through the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship process
    • Work in collaboration with the Director of Individual Giving and Membership team to create and manage the individual donor pipeline and make recommendations for assignment of donors to appropriate relationship managers.
  • Manage a portfolio of up to 50 mid-level donors and prospects through the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship process.
    • Identify annual fund donors and prospects between the $500 and $5,000 levels with a focus on increasing annual gifts
    • Make recommendations for movement of assigned donors to major gift prospect tracking.
  • Work in collaboration with the advancement leaders and staff to drive the digital fundraising strategies and implement campaigns across the zoo to help build a strong base of unrestricted annual gifts.
    • Improve donor retention, and reengaged lapsed donors.
    • Partner with the Relationship Data Services team to develop effective annual fund reporting and lists and segmentation.
  • Bring creativity, innovation and drive to the development team, working with all team members on fundraising planning and strategic growth.
    • Bring fundraising expertise to cross-functional project planning to ensure that fundraising activities advance fundraising, program and organizational development goals are reached.
  • Work with the Director of Donor Relations to establish comprehensive timelines and revenue forecasts and budgets for annual giving and stewardship programs.
    • Monitor monthly revenue and expense projections and outcomes for areas of responsibility
    • Track progress against annual and multi-year goals and benchmarks.
    • Analyze data to inform strategy and make recommendations for continuous improvement of annual giving programs.
  • Work with the Annual Giving Coordinator to evaluate return on investment for each giving appeal and program areas of responsibility and monitor donor retention rates and giving society programs in concert with the Donor Stewardship Coordinator.
  • Maintain accurate information on donors and ensure the confidentiality and security of proprietary and donor information in Raiser’s Edge.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of zoo programs and organizational priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated track record of accomplishment in annual giving, donor stewardship and donor communications development and execution, knowledge of fundraising principles and techniques, and direct mail appeals and newsletters.
  • A successful history of achieving tangible fundraising outcomes and the ability to respond effectively to changing organizational fundraising priorities.
  • Excellent project management skills, including exceptional organizational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple projects with clear deadlines.
  • Solid analytical skills—data analysis, creating and monitoring projections, analyzing return on investment.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to synthesize information from diverse sources.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to form personal relationships and to communicate effectively, delivering exceptional customer service to a variety of stakeholders (i.e. donors, sponsors and volunteers), both verbally and in writing.
  • Proven ability to integrate social media and electronic communications into fundraising communications and campaigns.
  • Ability to work well in an extremely fast-paced, ever-changing environment, and manage multiple projects, with competing demands while maintaining a commitment to excellence.
  • Must be well organized, detail oriented, and have strong critical thinking skills, with a proven ability to work independently.
  • Ability to travel as needed to perform job duties.
  • Understanding and respectful of diversity in a team-oriented culture.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule for events scheduled on evenings and weekends.
  • Must be a self-starter with imagination and creativity; knowledge of wildlife conservation issues a plus.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) or equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university; and five or more years of annual giving experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. Prior professional writing experience a plus.
  • Management is experience is preferred.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access) and data analytics. Ability to work with customized and/or other database management tools, perform mail merges, and conduct Internet research. Previous experience with Raiser’s Edge and Mail Chimp software is preferred; or the ability to gain proficiency in the use of fund raising software.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to make sound logical arguments, write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Ability to write persuasively and form a cogent argument as to why funders should support WPZ.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
