About the Organization The mission of Fenway Health is to enhance the wellbeing of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQIA+) community and all people in our neighborhoods and beyond through access to the highest quality health care, education, research, and advocacy. Fenway Health was founded in 1971 and has grown from a less than 10 person operation in the basement of a building near the Boston Fens to one of the largest LGBT-focused organizations in the world. It consists of three main centers:

• Fenway Community Health Center, our clinical arm, which is a federally qualified health center that operates three clinic sites (Fenway:1340, Fenway:South End, and the Sidney Borum, Jr. Health Center) in the Boston area and provides over 30,000 patients with primary and specialty medical care, behavioral health care, optometry care, and dental care;

• The Fenway Institute, our research/training/education/policy development arm, which houses numerous research initiatives as well as the National LGBT Education Project, the LGBT Aging Project, the National Center for Innovation in HIV Care, and the Center for Population Research in LGBT Health; and

• AIDS Action, our HIV/AIDS service organization, which provides nonclinical services (case management, housing and legal assistance, outreach, peer support) to people living with HIV/AIDS and operates numerous programs focusing on HIV/STD prevention/testing/treatment, including the Access (drug user health program), TransCEND (transgender peer support and risk reduction program), and Youth on Fire (drop-in center for homeless and street-involved youth) programs.

Position Research Assistant - Epidemiology Team (2018)

The Fenway Institute (TFI) is an interdisciplinary center for research, training, education, and policy development, focusing on national and international health issues housed within Fenway Community Health. Our mission is to ensure access to quality, culturally competent medical and mental health care for traditionally underserved communities, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and Study Coordinator, the Research Assistant assists with the implementation of a longitudinal cohort study of transgender women (TW) living with HIV to understand how stigma impact stress and cardiovascular health.

Typical duties include: Assesses and documents eligibility and arranges study visits; Conducts an informed consent process and research visits with study participants; Supports study recruitment efforts by identifying and establishing recruitment opportunities, updating recruitment calendar and tracking events; Screens and schedules potential participants; Maintains and updates recruitment and screening databases and prepares study documentation; Supports the planning and execution of retention events; Assists in the development and revision of study-related materials; Performs quality control and assurance procedures; Serves as a community leader and educator, by presenting at local conferences, meetings, and events on behalf of Fenway and the study team; Adheres to the highest principles of patient and client confidentiality and meets all team and organizational expectations.

Position Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in social science research or related field preferred

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Direct experience working with transgender people
  • Good interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Strong attention to detail, superior work ethic, professionalism and organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Word, Power-Point, Excel, Email) required with the willingness to master new software applications and technologies

Preferred Experience & Skills:

  • Prior experience conducting human subjects research highly preferred
  • Fluency or professional-proficiency in Spanish highly preferred
  • Prior clinical laboratory experience (such as phlebotomy) highly preferred
  • Comfort and willingness to relate identity(s) and personal experiences in the context of research and community involvement highly preferred
  • Applicants demonstrating personal and professional experiences relating to the challenges facing transgender women highly desired
  • Experience working in an ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse environment preferred
