HEAD START PART TIME SHADOW TEACHER

OVERVIEW: The Early Head Start Shadow Teacher must be professionally prepared and qualified to work with very young children and their families in a culturally relevant manner. They must have knowledge of early childhood development, Head Start requirements, and take direction well. They must be able to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.

WORK LOCATION: Lower Elwha Head Start

SUPERVISED BY: Education/Disabilities Manager & Classroom Lead Teacher

POSITION STATUS: Part Time

SALARY LEVEL: $16.00

WORK SCHEDULE: 26 hrs. per week Monday 8am 12:00pm; Tuesday-Friday 8:30 2:30p

Hours may vary dependent upon child need. TBD

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:

  • Provide one on one support to children exhibiting additional needs within the classroom environment.
  • Support your assigned student in many ways, including, but not limited to: filling in gaps that exist in the learning process, helping the student build self-confidence, promoting interaction in the classroom with other teachers and peers, and ensuring the student stays focused in the classroom.
  • Must work collaboratively with the other teachers in the classroom as well as the Education/Disabilities Manager.
  • Develop and implement an effective communication method with the parents to share information on a regular basis.
  • Assists in implementing the program curriculum and the Head Start Performance Standards for classrooms.
  • Utilize positive behavior guidance techniques within the classroom when addressing various classroom issues and challenging behaviors.
  • Facilitates preschool learning, using appropriate child development knowledge. Stays involved with the children at all times in the classroom and on the playground, specifically the child you are assigned to shadow and support.
  • Collaborates with the Lead Teacher in observing assigned child and recording observations and making appropriate referrals and setting individual goals for the child throughout the program year.
  • Advocate for the assigned child to ensure inclusion in all aspects of the program day. This may include developing and implementing accommodations and modifications as necessary to the weekly lesson plan.
  • Participates in center staff meetings, case management meetings, and Head Start program meetings.
  • Actively participate in recommended trainings or classes for ongoing professional development and be able to share new information with staff.
  • This individual is to help the child assigned learn how to stay focused, participate appropriately in class activities, function in an environment where there are many distractions, gain self-control, ask for support from teachers and peers, respond appropriately to classmates in social situations, and any other needed skills to succeed in a school setting.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY POSITION:

  • Ability to assist and supervise preschool children and ensure a safe learning environment including the ability to monitor and respond at all times in the classroom and outdoor play areas. This includes the physical ability to move quickly, keeping in visual contact, and assess situations with good judgment.
  • Ability to remain calm in a variety of settings and circumstances, including challenging behaviors and classroom situations that may arise.
  • Ability to respond appropriately (both mentally and physically) to an emergency or a crisis situation.
  • Knowledge of Early Childhood Education, child development, and positive behavior guidance techniques.
  • Ability to be a sensitive and mature individual who is able to relate well to preschool children and adults.
  • Ability to provide leadership and stability for program continuity.
  • Collaborate with E/DM to handle any staff and/or family issues that develop in a professional manner.
  • Follow chain of command for all conflict situations.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least two years working with children exhibiting challenging behaviors
  • High school diploma or GED
  • CDA credential and/or attend classes in ECE coursework preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, nurturing and problem solving skills required
  • Valid Washington State Drivers license, must be insurable
  • First Aid/Infant and Child CPR required. Must keep current. Will provide training, if needed.
  • A physical exam with results in letter form that states person is free of communicable diseases (Negative TB test) by employment date
  • Communication skills: both verbal and written is necessary
  • No prior convictions of child-related offenses or any felonies. Background check to be conducted prior to employment date
  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Head Start Drug Free Workplace policies. Pre-Employment drug testing to be administer prior to employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift and carry a child 20+ pounds
  • Other Functional requirements:
  • Moderate lifting, 15-40 pounds, moderate carrying over 10 pounds and light carrying under 10 pounds, and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Daily kneeling, stooping, bending and sitting on the floor to attend to childrens needs.
  • Ability to assist in toilet training and/or change diapers/pull-ups as needed for assigned child.

OTHER DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Availability to assume other duties within Head Start as needed.
  • Provide for the physical needs of preschool children, including diapering, toileting and feeding.
  • Other duties as specified by managers
  • Reports to work at scheduled times and maintain a good attendance record; performs duties in a timely and professional manner; participates in all program activities with a positive attitude and behavior.
