What are we looking for in a Shelter Advocate?

This position is part of our Aspen Victim Advocacy program and provides direct advocacy services to individuals who have experienced sexual assault or domestic violence. Shelter Advocates offer information, support, and referrals to clients in shelter to help clients meet their goals and needs. Shelter Advocates also assist with other Aspen programs, including crisis services, community education, and volunteer retention. Due to the nature of this position, excellent listening & communication skills and a collaborative attitude are a must.

Shelter Advocate duties may include:

  • providing advocacy-based counseling to victims of sexual assault & domestic violence including safety planning, determining short-term and long-term needs and goals, and making referrals
  • facilitating support groups and weekly house meetings
  • supporting all aspects of shelter program, including preparing rooms for new clients and assuring all clients adhere to shelter policies
  • performing community outreach & education about Aspen services and the prevention of sexual assault & domestic violence
  • coordinate with Aspen team and the community to develop programs and enhance partnerships that benefit clients
  • providing on-call coverage after hours for the advocacy/crisis program as needed
  • maintaining accurate documentation and data collection

 
Position Requirements

Education/Experience: Bachelor's Degree in social services or related field. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Other Credentials Required: Driver's License, Vehicle Liability Insurance
