POSITION SUMMARY: BASIC FUNCTION

The Data Center Facility Operations (DCFO) Supervisor oversees the operations of and work on the physical infrastructure systems in their assigned facilities. As a subject matter expert on data center facility operations and maintenance, they provide high level technical support for the most critical work activities and customer interactions.

The DCFO Supervisor is responsible for directing the daily work effort of the on-site technical team in support of the scheduled and emergent operations and maintenance activities, with an emphasis on safety and operational continuity. They are also responsible for coordinating the activities of outside contractors and in performing training qualifications for their staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directly supervises the DCFO technical staff
  • Operates and maintains data center in such a condition as to assure conformance to customer Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for system uptime, environmental conditions and incident response
  • Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal codes and regulations
  • Provides personnel assignments for scheduled operations and maintenance activities
  • Coordinates the response to emergent events, incidents and emergencies
  • Ensures the DCFO team works effectively to achieve the team goals, reviewing budget, staff planning, efficiency, etc.
  • Oversees the operation and maintenance of the data center equipment to achieve optimum levels of safety, performance, reliability and efficiency
  • Conducts in-depth technician training on equipment operation and maintenance, along with site operating procedures.
  • Manages training program administration and documentation
  • Works with customers and other business units to ensure smooth and successful provisioning of customer work requests
  • Takes responsibility for the safety and well-being of the DCFO team and all the facility occupants
  • Responsible for shift assignments, timekeeping review & approval and PTO approval for all assigned DCFO Technicians.
  • Writes, reviews and provides technical feedback on Methods of Procedure (MOPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Standard Methods of Procedure (SMPs) and Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs).
  • Supervises the execution of Methods of Procedure and ensures their thorough completion
  • Performs other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Strong background in electrical and mechanical systems supporting design review, layout, installation, commissioning and operations
  • Knowledge of NFPA electrical, fire and life safety and building codes
  • Strong knowledge of industrial safety regulations and best practices (i.e. lockout/tag out, arc flash protection, OSHA and state regulations)
  • Experienced with data trending / tracking and analysis and ability to rapidly learn and use facility monitoring systems
  • Strong supervisory skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Strong understand of the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of large industrial mechanical & electrical systems including:
    • Chilled water systems
    • Centrifugal chillers
    • Cooling towers
    • Indirect air exchange heat wheel systems
    • Heat exchangers
    • Water Treatment Systems
    • VFD’s and pumps
    • HVAC equipment
    • Air handlers
    • Humidification systems
    • Water heaters
    • Water/Air filters
    • BMS and PLC Controls
    • Diesel generators
    • Fuel/oil systems
    • Medium and low voltage electrical distribution
    • Grounding and lightning protection systems
    • UPS systems
    • Fire detection and suppression systems
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
  • Ability to provide training on electrical and mechanical systems and procedures
  • Ability to conduct power & fire system capacity, safety and code compliance assessments
  • Ability to operate in and promote a rigorous process-driven, team environment
  • Ability to logically analyze and solve problems
  • Ability to multi-task multiple projects
  • Detailed oriented

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree or equivalent work experience normally obtained with 5-6 years’ related experience.
  • A minimum of five or more years in a technical environment working on critical power and mechanical systems (preference given to data center, hospital, semi- conductor or power plant experience)
  • Minimum of two or more years as a foreman, lead or senior level technician in a critical facility environment
  • CPR/First Aid/AED and NFPA70E certified, or able to obtain certification during employment
  • Forklift Certified, or able to obtain certification during employment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Primarily walking, standing, and bending with some sitting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with verbal, visual and listening skills
  • Able to lift heavy equipment, up to 50 pounds.
  • Close visual work on a computer terminal.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate any required equipment as well as to operate computer keyboard, mouse, and other technical instruments.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work on raised platform.

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Typical data center work environment with varying temperatures and loud noises.
  • Extensive daily usage of a computer or workstation.
  • Work on site; no telecommuting.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be comfortable working in a highly critical, fast paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency situations at the data center.
  • Must be willing to be part of the after-hours notification and escalation protocol.
  • Must be willing to work outside normal business hours, including weekends, late nights, holidays.
  • Must possess a current, valid state-issued driver’s license.
