TITLE: Youth Mentor

STATUS: Casual

PROGRAM: Bloorview Research Institute

SALARY: $14 per hour

This is a consumer role that requires interested candidates to have previous employment experience and personal experience as a client in the healthcare system. This a part-time, casual position is available from June 2019-August 2019 to assist with a research study, 'Partners for enhancing healthy and productive work for young men and women with disabilities' within the TRAIL lab at the Holland Bloorview Research Institute. The youth facilitator will help develop content and provide feedback on toolkits and simulation scenarios focused on disability disclosure, workplace rights, and accommodations for youth with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Share lived experience related to disability disclosure and accommodations in the workplace in a variety of formats:
    • Help create comic and/or script on experience of disability disclosure/workplace accommodations request
    • Share workplace disclosure/accommodations story via video or in written format
  • Give feedback on content and format of a youth toolkit directed at workplace rights, disclosure, and accommodations
  • Contribute to the creation of a youth simulation scenario related to workplace accommodations and disclosure (help develop different situations, learning objectives, create characters, settings, and outcomes of youth simulations)
  • Help promote awareness about research projects and assist with recruitment
  • Work with members of the research team
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • An individual with Lived Experience of disability or acquired injury
  • Currently enrolled in either high school or post-secondary diploma or degree program
  • Successful completion of Holland Bloorview's youth mentorship training, preferred
  • Previous employment experience, preferred
  • Interested and willing to share their experience of disability disclosure and/or accommodations in the workplace
  • Fun and creative
  • Excellent verbal, written communication skills and computer skills
  • Good organizational skills and ability to complete work on time
  • Demonstrates ability to organize time and manage working hours
  • Self-directed and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Comfortable working as part of a team
