Job Description Summary

OTR drivers are given the responsibility of delivering all freight in a safe and prompt manner through the use of a tractor-trailer. OTR drivers also have the duty to engage with our customers and clients in a courteous and professional manner. At all times, OTR drivers are to obey all Department of Transportation regulations and laws, and at the same time adhere to JSC Trucking’s policies. OTR drivers will experience extended periods of time away from their hometowns, and must be able to adapt to the nature of their work. In addition to this, OTR drivers must be able to communicate effectively and take responsibility for all equipment that they are provided by JSC Trucking.

Job Duties

Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Must abide by all Department of Transportation, federal, state, and local regulations
  • Adhere to JSC Trucking’s policy as outlined in the Employee Handbook and the DOT Driver Handbook
  • Be able to hook and unhook a trailer in a safe and proper manner without assistance
  • Take responsibility for all equipment used, including materials and electronics within the tractor, the tractor itself, the trailer, and the shipped goods within the trailer.
  • Maintain a clean and safe tractor environment
  • When necessary, load and unload all goods with in a safe and prompt manner.
  • Must report all accidents, incidents, and any circumstances that may jeopardize the safety of our driver, equipment, and goods being shipped.
  • Performs work required in a timely manner and maintains adequate production in order to meet service schedules.
  • Conducts a thorough pre-trip inspection of the equipment assigned as prescribed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and JSC Trucking. Inspect tractor and trailer defects during and after trips and submit a written report on the condition of the tractor and trailer at the end of each trip.
  • Safely operates tractor trailer equipment in different configurations as assigned, with varying weights as allowed by law, under all types of climatic conditions, terrain, road conditions and traffic situations, in urban and rural settings, for extended periods of time, over long distances, either direct or by way of other intermediate points in accordance with all federal, state and local laws and regulations as well as JSC Trucking’s policy.

COMMUNICATION

  • Communicate thoroughly and promptly with the Logistics Manager.
  • Understands and carries out instructions given orally and in writing.

ORGANIZATION / PLANNING

  • Maintain all documents that range from log books to bills of lading, and other papers of information essential to our business. In addition, ensure that all documents are verified and properly completed prior to departure from site.

JOB SKILL

  • Class A CDL

PROBLEM SOLVING

  • Ability to work independently without constant supervision

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

  • Accurate log books and other documents are critical for Department of Transportation compliance

WORK RELATIONSHIPS

  • Maintain a professional and respectful relationship with internal and external customers. Establish relationships to be able to accomplish work through others that are not direct reports.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma and truck driver training courses

SKILLS / ABILITIES

  • (Operate a Motor Vehicle)
  • Must be able to operate a tractor-trailer.
  • Must be able to read and write in the English Language.
  • Must be able to perform certain arithmetic as related to hours of service, logging hours worked, distance mileage calculations, among others.

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of FMCSA rules and regulations

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION

  • Valid Class A – Commercial Driver's License
  • Must be able to maintain a medical card as required by the Department of Transportation through its physical exam.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 5 years with Coast to Coast

Working Conditions

This position is driving a tractor-trailer OTR to haul freight. This position will require working in all weather conditions.
