Job Summary

The Substance Abuse therapist will provide clinical service and needed related services for clients who are eligible for and requesting mental health and/or substance abuse services from Counseling Services. Substance Abuse therapists offer guidance to individuals, couples, families and groups who are dealing with issues that affect their mental health and well-being. Therapists are responsible for providing counseling and case work services to consumers. Responsibilities may include assessing mental health status through interviews and observations and developing treatment plans and/or making referrals to the appropriate services. They may also be asked to provide crisis intervention services to consumers who are a danger to themselves and/or others. The therapist also maintains clinical records and other documentation in accordance with contract compliance, COA, and St. Vincent Catholic Charities Counseling Services procedures.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Will provide assessment, psychotherapy and counseling services to families, couples, children and their parents, and adult individuals and groups.
  • Will carry a minimum caseload as indicated in offer, including one evening per week, with a goal of 24-26 client contact hours rendered weekly. See Compensation Statement or Offer Letter for details.
  • Will maintain own schedule of availability to be shared with support staff and Clinical Supervisor meeting the above requirements each week and update support staff with any schedule changes immediately.
  • Will accept managed care client assignments according to the clinic's contracts and policy.
  • Will keep a clinical case record for each client including the timely completion of clinical, quality, and outcomes documentation.
  • Will produce documentation which meets or exceeds professional documentation standards as dictated by managed care entities and best practices.
  • Will complete diagnosis form, pre-authorization, and any necessary documentation for billing on the same day of service.
  • Will complete session notes within a business day from the time of service.
  • Will complete ongoing reports including monthly progress notes, quarterly and utilization reviews, and other documentation as required no later than the 5th day of each month.
  • Will provide assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment plan goals and objectives within timeframes set by the policies and procedures of the Counseling Services Program.
  • Will follow standards established by their professional associations Code of Ethics regarding client treatment, confidentiality, standards of care, and professional conduct.
  • Will participate in ongoing individual supervision at a minimum of 1 hour per pay period or more at the discretion of the Clinical Supervisor and participate in monthly group supervision in Utilization Review as required by COA standards.

Will accept additional responsibilities as assigned by Clinical Supervisor and/or Clinical Director.

Position Requirements

Education: Minimum of a Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology or related fields. Additional certification from a State-endorsed board (e.g.: CAADC certification for addictions/substance abuse work) is preferred and may be required.

Experience: Minimum of one year’s experience providing psychotherapy, substance abuse/mental health and/or family counseling services to individuals, groups and/or families. Preferred two years of post-graduate experience providing psychotherapy, substance abuse/mental health, group and/or family counseling services to individuals and families. Strong verbal and writing skills in English.

Registration, licenses, certifications or special training: Must have unrestricted licensure to practice in area of specialty through the State of Michigan in good standing or the necessary graduate/post-graduate experience that would qualify employee for State license at time of hire.

Physical Demands: The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Emotionally able to work with information that may be traumatic in nature, as well as, work with individuals or families in crisis or experiencing trauma.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk up to 8 hours per shift.
  • Work involves talking, stooping, squatting, twisting, climbing, kneeling, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to sit and use computer workstation, including keyboard and visual display terminal for extended periods of time.
  • Noise in the work environment is usually moderately quiet but can be very loud at times.
  • Work in an environment with various degrees of discomfort.
