Maintenance Student Assistant (Recreational Sports) Definition and Purpose Under the direction of the Maintenance Technician II (Recreations Sports), the Maintenance Student Assistant is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair of equipment and furnishings, and maintaining clean and sanitary facilities. Educational Requirements and Qualifying Experience • Must be a currently enrolled student at Cal Poly with a minimum of 6 units. All ASI student staff must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 at Cal Poly. Graduate students must carry 4 units/3.0 cumulative GPA at Cal Poly. • Base knowledge of building, construction or mechanical trade. • Experience/knowledge in methods and materials used in repair and maintenance. • Ability/experience in the use of hand tools and other equipment. • Ability to perform physical labor (including lifting up to 40 lbs). • Previous maintenance or custodial experience. • Ability to be highly organized and have good planning skills. • Excellent oral and written communication skills. • First Aid, CPR and AED Certification required. • Ability to work with diverse populations and those with special limitations or needs. • Ability to work independently and demonstrate time management skills. Supervisory Responsibilities • None Essential Duties and Responsibilities • Perform minor, routine building maintenance and repair of a variety of Recreation Center equipment • Assist in painting buildings and equipment • Be neat, clean, tactful, cooperative, and courteous to all staff and customers • Work independently and demonstrate strong time management skills • Ensure a safe environment for all participants • Inspect, repair, and maintain in safe operating condition, Recreational Sports equipment including cardiovascular machines, weight equipment, and Intramural Sports equipment • Operate and maintain pool cleaning equipment • Perform minor custodial duties on an as-needed basis • Assist with Recreational Sports event set-up • Maintain familiarity with evacuation plan for work area • Attend all mandatory meetings • Provide quality customer service for all staff and customers • Awareness of safety concerns and risk management • Awareness of and appreciation for individual uniqueness and diversity • Maintain prompt hours and follow absence procedures • Maintain a working relationship with staff and co-workers • Adhere to and enforce all ASI departmental policies and procedures • Commitment to student development and leadership • Assist team as needed Other Duties and Responsibilities • The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment. • Other duties as assigned.
