Who We Are

You will work within the Monitoring & Response Directorate of the CERT Division of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). The SEI is a federally funded research and development center on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. CERT engages with the US Department of Defense and US Government to research, develop, apply and transition complex cybersecurity solutions.

What We Do:

The CERT Situational Awareness group works with government customers to help them protect and defend their networks and systems. We pioneer innovative ways to monitor and safeguard networked systems, develop new ways of identifying and investigating network anomalies, and analyze the cybersecurity of systems. We research and develop ground breaking technical solutions for operational use in high-impact environments.

Position Summary:

This is a full-time position for onsite customer support of a cyber security operations environment three to five days a week, with the remaining time spent in the office or otherwise outside the customer environment. It is a good opportunity for you to take a step back from operations to tackle larger problems that operational analysts and engineers may not have the time, resources, or expertise to solve. As a member of the team you will be responsible for:

  • Developing and transitioning solutions that mature customer security operations.
  • Developing and prototyping of new analysis techniques, tools, and platforms, preparation of analytic reports.
  • Providing technical support to decision makers.
  • Providing system of systems (SoS) and systems requirements development, engineering, analysis, technology evaluation and deployment guidance.
  • Advancing the state of art of cybersecurity architectures and security operations.


  • BS with eight (8) years or MS with five (5) year or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Willingness to travel to various locations to support the SEI’s overall mission. This includes within the SEI and CMU community, sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings on occasion. Limited Travel (Less than 10%)
  • You will be subject to a background check and need to be eligible to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to present technical topics to audiences from senior leadership to technical specialists.
  • Ability to work with multiple partners to promote practical solutions to tough security problems.
  • Strong understanding of networking, security, systems administration, programming, and cloud.
  • Ability to work at the SoS architecture level to identify and understand trade-offs.
  • Strong research and writing skills.

Desired Experience:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, or related discipline with five (5) years of experience in security operations; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • IT operations
  • Security operations
  • Security research
  • Networking

Job Function Breakdown:

75% Support government program offices in the areas of strategy; process/policies; requirements elicitation; design and architecture; operations; outreach; and training.

15% Enable the transition and appropriate focus of situational awareness analysis and engineering approaches and tools into operational environments.
