Summary:

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will be the world’s premier institution dedicated to the art and science of movies. Located on Wilshire and Fairfax in Los Angeles, the Museum will be simultaneously immersive, experimental, educational, and entertaining. More than a museum, this dynamic film center will offer unparalleled experiences and insights into movies and moviemaking.

The Exhibits department is responsible for the planning, design, and installation of the museum’s exhibitions and projects. Reporting to the Exhibition A/V Manager, the Exhibition A/V Technician’s primary focus will be audiovisual support for museum exhibitions and projects, including the installation and deinstallation as well as daily maintenance of audiovisual equipment (digital projectors, 16mm and 35mm silent and sound motion picture projectors, flat screen displays, computers, amplifiers, speakers, media players, various mounting equipment, etc.).

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in all aspects of exhibition A/V installation and deinstallation.
  • Perform regular A/V maintenance of the museum’s core and temporary exhibition galleries.
  • A/V monitoring and maintenance of all museum exhibitions during weekend public hours of operation.
  • Troubleshoot technical problems.
  • Assist with the coordination and storage of A/V equipment.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of technically complex and artistically demanding projects.
  • Train staff in proper equipment use and procedures as needed.
  • Serve as the lead A/V technician to a staff of part-time A/V technicians as needed.
  • Assist in the research, development, and implementation of technologies for all exhibition and project needs.
 
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor degree in Film, Art, or related field.
  • 1-3 years of experience with audiovisual equipment in a museum or related environment.
  • Working knowledge of hand power tools.
  • Demonstrated experience working successfully in a team environment, performing rotating tasks while exercising discretion and sound independent judgment.
  • Prior experience or willingness to be trained on and utilize OSHA approved safety equipment such as respirators and protective clothing.
  • Some experience with museum-level art handling practices and knowledge of archival materials and museum/gallery warehousing best practices preferred.
  • Ability to work on an active construction site, including climbing and working on ladders, lifting and moving up to 35 lbs., and intermittent physical activity (walking, standing, twisting, sitting, bending, and stooping).
  • Must be comfortable working around paints, cleansers and other similar products in a gallery environment and in work spaces that collect dust.
  • Availability to work a Thursday thru Monday schedule, some evenings, and some holidays.
