PROGRAM: Bloorview Research Institute

SALARY: Commensurate with experience

Position Overview:

The Bloorview Research Institute at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital invites applications for a Manager of Research Operations, reporting to the Director of Research Operations.

The research institute is undergoing a strategic expansion. As such, additional administrative leadership is required over the next year to accommodate the heightened workload related to expansion priorities. The Manager of Research Operations will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Bloorview Research Institute and for the provision of appropriate staff, systems and services to support the research activities and provide accountability to funders. The individual in this position will be a member of the Executive Team of the Institute providing input into strategic decisions and can be the responsible person for implementation of strategic initiatives. Policy development, implementation and ongoing management in all areas affecting research are the responsibility of this position. This individual is also responsible for developing and ensuring adequate communication systems within the Institute and between the Institute and the hospital.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

Operations

  • Oversight of research grants management
  • Oversight of the Student and Trainee Program
  • Oversee Volunteer Program
  • Support periodic review of scientists
  • Support the Appointment Committee in reviewing all appointments to the research institute including clinical research appointments, visiting scholars and adjunct appointments. Oversee internal research funding competitions
  • Develop and maintain internal information systems
  • Preparation of monthly board report submissions
  • Collecting and synthesizing data per external reporting requirements
  • Develop and renew policies as required
  • Support the planning and oversight of research related events such as the BRI annual symposium

Finance

  • Monitor internal and external research funding
  • Work closely with Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Foundation to report on the use of funds
  • Support the development and maintenance of BRI's operating budget

Human Resources

  • Provide guidance and support for Research Operations Staff
  • Manage employment issues, and staff and trainee development
  • Support the recruitment, retention and assessment of staff ensuring adherence to Holland Bloorview's policies and procedures
  • Coach administrative staff within the research institute

Competencies required include: strong understanding of research administration in the Canadian context; high level of competency with meeting facilitation, staff coaching, financial reporting, report generation, conflict resolution; proven leadership in an interdisciplinary academic environment; excellent communication skills; ability to work with a diversity of professionals and trainees; strong management capacity.
