Description

Purpose of Position: The Chantey Foreman works with the Interpretation Department supervisors to coordinate all music-based interpretation activities for Mystic Seaport Museum, both on and off site.

Essential Functions

Be a skilled singer, musician and performer: Demonstrate music performance ability including an adequate sense of tonality and intonation for a cappella singing, vocal stamina and voice projection skills, and proficiency on at least one traditional instrument; present engaging solo educational performances, both on-site and as school outreach as determined by museum management; present solo or multi-performer entertainment performances, both on-site and outreach as determined by museum management; lead chanties for all required demonstrations.

Participate in and lead shipboard demonstrations: The Chantey Foreman plays a key role in various demonstrations throughout the museum's working waterfront exhibits. As such, they must be able to communicate safely and effectively with other members of demonstration team; be able to work outside for a full day in any and all weather conditions; be able to climb and work aloft on the Museum's sailing vessels (working aloft duties include setting and furling sails, bending and unbending sails, gear, and running rigging); be able to memorize rigging lines and the order of operations for complicated demonstrations; be able to support one's own body weight, to haul on lines to control and lift heavy weights, to lift at least 50 pounds; assist with additional physical activities in response to: the beginning and ending of the season, holiday weekends, and storm preparation.

Provide leadership to the museum's team of Working Chanteymen and Sea Music Interpreters: Mentor, coach and train interpreters assigned to the chantey and sea music staff; assist with evaluation and scheduling by providing supervisors with information about the strengths and weaknesses of the interpreters assigned to program area, as well as who may be a good interpreter to add to the list of qualified interpreters for the area under the foreman's oversight; periodically review and provide input to the supervisors to update, as necessary, the qualifications necessary to be a member of the museum's chantey staff; coordinate and help to schedule staff for special programs and classes as advertised by the museum; maintain relevant materials, equipment, and working environment in a neat and orderly fashion; order and procure materials as may be necessary for the proper function of the exhibit / program area; develop, review annually, and update as necessary, relevant training materials including the exhibit /demonstration handbooks; maintain close contact with staff assigned to the chantey program, as well as supervisors, and schedule regular check-in meetings.

Help to plan and execute mission-driven programming: Work closely with supervisory staff to plan and execute the museum's annual Sea Music Festival, including artistic direction, promotion, fundraising efforts, and all related logistics.

Be an effective Museum Interpreter: The Chantey Foreman is part of the museum's team of Interpreters. As such, they must provide a friendly, welcoming environment for museum visitors; utilize a variety of interpretive techniques to accurately communicate the American maritime experience to museum visitors; ensure dissemination of accurate information through ongoing training and professional development; be familiar with and demonstrate knowledge of the museum and its offerings so as to orient and guide visitors to help them make the best use of the museum; be familiar with and follow museum-wide and departmental policies; care for exhibits, objects and artifacts in the spaces assigned and serve as the 'first line' of security for them; and participate in classes and special programs as assigned.

 
Position Requirements

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in using Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability and willingness to accept work assignments in challenging conditions, such as: hot/cold temperatures, all types of weather, proximity to wood/coal stove fires
  • B.A. / B.S. preferred, but significant professional experience may serve as a substitute for a college degree.

Morgan, America's oldest commercial ship still in existence.
